Chris Gethard Confronts an Internet Tormentor

On the internet, it's really easy to hide behind a screenname and be a real asshole. It's even easier when you're being an anonymous asshole to someone on TV or in a movie that you don't care for, as what are the chances that they'll see it? But when Travis left some reeeeeal harsh words on Chris Gethard's IMDB profile after watching and not liking his Comedy Central show Big Lake ("You have no discernible talent, no charisma, no personality, and no recognizable skills. Unless your performance is some kinda of meta joke a'la Andy Kaufman or, to a lesser extent in every sense of the word, Joaquin Phoenix, you need to stop acting, spend a few years making atonements for your sins, and vow to never ever ever ever stand in front of a camera for the rest of your life."), Chris tracked him down and got him to agree to talk to him on camera.

The results are…weird. You sort of expect Travis to feel somewhat guilty about being such a prick for no reason, especially when Gethard is so nice and good-natured about it, but he does not. In fact, he is still a prick. He's so blasé about how much of a jerk he is it's disconcerting, like he's some sort of haughty robot that was not programmed to feel empathy. And it's clear that poor Gethard was expecting some sort of genial moment in which the two could bond over how weird and dehumanizing the internet is, but Travis was only barely genial and did nothing to humanize himself. So next time you read a really mean-spirited internet comment, just remember: there's a really mean-spirited person behind it, and he probably lives in St. Louis.

Ok, I tweeted a reply to this, but 140 characters wasn't enough. I agree that that Travis guy is a classic internet-commenting douche (I see the irony that I'm slamming him anonymously), and I agree that his hate was misdirected towards Chris.
My issue is that his comments, in the context of Chris as an actor in Big Lake, are not all that wrong. Big Lake, the show, was an absolute trainwreck. It felt like Ferrell and McKay were having a Kaufmen-esque joke at the viewers expense. See, I blame the show, not Chris.
The show felt like it was trying to be a surreal, anti-sitcom (multi-cam and all), but was just lame and flat. Other than Parnell, it wasn't weird enough to be comically surreal.
And other than some bad reviews, when the first few episodes aired, there was no other backlash. No fellow comics taking jabs at this decent line-up of talent making absolute dreck. And no one from the show came forward and said, "yeah, we tried to do X, but it really didn't work."
I have no problem with people I like failing, but it's nice to hear them admit it and then move on. In the end, Big Lake was just a waste of talent and resources that could have been used to create a really great show.

oh yeah, and I don't think I'm being an internet asshole. I hate trolls and hecklers. I just wrote the above from my perspective as a fan of most of the people involved in Big Lake, who was then totally disappointed and confused at the outcome. I don't lose sleep over it, but it was definitely weird not hearing other people speak up over how bad of a show it was.

#1 The guy has a combover
#2 Big Lake sucked. I watched 4 episodes and they did all suck
#3 Chris Gethard didn't show any discernible talent. I haven't seen anything else he's done but if that was his major shot he missed.
#4 The guy doesn't act like a robot and he did show empathy.
#5 One post does not a tormentor make.
