Will Arnett Not Joining The Office Because He's Attached to Christina Applegate's Pilot?

Will Arnett is appearing in the season finale of The Office. This, along with the fact that Ricky Gervais said that he suggested Arnett as a replacement for the departing Steve Carell, has lead to rampant speculation/hopes that Arnett will be leading the Scranton branch of Dunder-Mifflin full-time next season. Turns out, that may not be the case.

I hear that Arnett is attached to the Lorne-Michaels-produced Christina Applegate pilot that NBC has ordered up. Because of that commitment, it's unlikely that he'd be able to sign on to star in The Office as well. This is sad for people who want to see an office run by Gob Bluth, but really, it's tough to complain about a potential show starring Applegate and Arnett that's being written by Parks and Rec writer Emily Spivey. We'll see what happens, but I'm OK with having two different potential sitcoms for Arnett to star in on NBC.

That is kind of BETTER NEWS.

I was really looking forward to Will Arnett taking The Office, as he's one of the few people I can see carving out his own niche and not just doing a Carell impression. On the other hand, though, taking The Office could be a career setback for Arnett if it loses popularity with him (which it likely will with any new star), so this seems like a better move for Arnett in the long run.
