What Is the Single Best Sitcom Episode of All Time?

Here's a fun thought experiment: of all the episodes of all the sitcoms that have aired over the years, what is the single best one? Obviously there is no objective "best" episode out there that everyone can agree on, but still, certain candidates come to mind immediately: Marge vs. the Monorail! The Contest! Lucy Does a TV Commercial!

Because there are few things more fun for comedy nerds than revisiting some of the best TV comedy ever produced and then talking about it, we're prepping a tournament pitting 32 of the greatest sitcom episodes ever against each other, March Madness style. We'll be creating a bracket and then opening up the competition to voting next month. It'll allow us to, if not determine a winner we can all agree on, at least have some fun arguing for our personal favorites.

But in order to do that, we need a list of entries. So, what should be on there? What sitcom episodes stand above their peers? We have a short list that we've put together, but wanted to make sure we didn't miss anything deserving. So argue for your favorites in the comments below!

A note: we're looking for sitcoms only, so sketch isn't eligible, despite how incredible certain episodes of SNL, Mr. Show, The State, and Kids in the Hall are.

Party Down should have an entry, but not "Ricky Sargulesh" which is probably the worst episode of the entire show, objectively. I think most Party Down fans would settle for "Steve Guttenberg Birthday" or Not On Your Wife Opening Night."

I would also like to suggest Always Sunny: "The Nightman Cometh" (for Charlie Day's amazing performance as an overzealous musical theater director) and The Office (US): "Dinner Party" as the apotheosis of the Michael/Jan storyline, which was the funniest character arc in that show's run

    • Just One Thing

@Evan Whom@twitter Ricky Sargulesh is far from the worst episode of "Party Down". "Objeectively," that would be Constance's Wedding.

Best show ever? Maybe "Homer Goes to College"? Who can really say?

  • http://twitter.com/bradfordevans Bradford Evans

Everyone knows "Hank's Night in the Sun" is the best Larry Sanders episode, although "Flip" and "Off-Camera" are amazing as well.

The best moment in that episode of Arrested Development where Tobias directs the school play is when he gets onto the stage by awkwardly rolling his whole body onto it. If there's ever a contest for best 2 seconds of a sitcom, that should be a contender.

All good suggestions so far. I wish I had a better grasp of sitcom history to make some good suggestions from further back than SIX YEARS ago, but here's a few that immediately jumped to my mind aside from some of the ones already listed:

    Eastbound & Down – "Chapter 6"

I normally don't have strong opinions on stuff like this, but I must have watched "The Fight" (Parks & Rec) at least six or seven times during the week after it aired. So funny, with contributions from a great variety of charcters.

  • B Westof@twitter

To go with many that have already been nominated –

Parks and Recreation: The Practice Date
    Simpsons: Lisa's Rival
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Dennis and Dee Go on Welfare
Community: Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design

I can't pick just one Arrested Development.

Might as well throw out some dark horses:

I wish I could say I have studied all the great sitcoms and thought deeply about them all, but in reality the only sitcom from pre-1990 that I watch and enjoy is I Love Lucy, and even though I still find that show genuinely funny, I can't say I enjoy it enough to put it on this list. So, like everyone else, my list is dominated by the sitcom happenings of the last 10-15 years.

    The Office (US): The Injury
    Business School
Take Your Daughter to Work Day
    Parks and Recreation: Sweetums
    Harvest Festival
    The Camel
King of the Hill: Hank's Dirty Laundry
    As Old as the Hills
    My Own Private Rodeo
Freaks and Geeks: Tricks and Treats
    Flight of the Conchords: Yoko
    What Goes on Tour
    Unnatural Love
Arrested Development: Out on a Limb/Hand to God
    Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Doll
    Trick or Treat
    Mary, Joseph, and Larry
Shamefully, As much as I love The Simpsons, I watched the vast majority of their episodes when I was much younger and can't really give a mature opinion on their best episodes, though I still love the show when I catch an episode. But the I still can pretty clearly remember the hilariousness of the episode where Mr. Burns' baseball team has a collective nervous breakdown – "Homer at the Bat"

It doesn't look like these have been said before. Like the others, apologies for the recentness of the episodes, although to be fair sitcoms right up to the mid eighties seemed to be designed as a whole, not episode by episode.

The Simpsons: Homer vs the 18th Amendment
(I would say the best episode ever kinda needs to be a Simpsons. They're just so stand alone)
The Office – Threat Level Midnight
    Scrubs – My First Day
Black Books – Fever (although you knida need to have see any other episode to, for lack of a better turn, 'get it')
The Vicar of Dibley – Summer (but you may pick any one of the seasonal specials)
Father Ted – Kicking Bishop Brennan up the Arse (the reason is in the title)

Surprised there's no love for Home Improvement!

I'd say the best episode is by far "Don't Tell Momma", where Tim accidentally drops the beam on Jill's Nomad. Not only is the beam drop hilarious, but also how Tim tries to cover up the accident as well as the fact that they actually had to add a clip at the end showing the Nomad was actually fine, and it was a double that was crushed!

  • Evil Sean

I have to 2nd the inclusion of Get a Life – the Prettiest Week of My Life. The one where Chris attends the Handsome Boy Modeling School and calls himself "Sparkles." Classic.

Also, 2 more eps of Curb Your enthusiasm: The one where Larry trips Shaq at a Lakers game, becomes a pariah and finds it liberating and the one where he rejects the teen trick-or-treaters and they spray paint "bald asshole" on his house.

Maj. Gen. Bartford Hamilton Steele: A musical number. Why it's in your blood boy!
    [singing and dancing]
Maj. Gen. Bartford Hamilton Steele: When the sun goes down, and the darkies go to town, Hey hey what do you say.
[Continues singing and dancing on out of the tent - The JAG officer looks back at Henry, and places the papers back into his file]

MASH Deal Me Out (first Flagg appearance and Sydney is in it)

    • Haligator

      @Larry Handlin@facebook
That was the episode I was thinking of also. One of the funniest ever. And it through every one for a loop when the VERY straight laced Harry Morgan did the dance at the end. So I second this.

  • Shep Proudfoot

So many possibilities, but I'm going to go with a short list that probably overlooks a few:

The Simpsons: Last Exit to Springfield (and if I had to choose ONLY ONE episode of any show for this contest, that'd be it)

    Seinfeld: The Contest

    Curb: The Survivor

Community: Remedial Chaos Theory or Critical Film Studies

Parks and Rec: Ron and Tammy

Always Sunny: Mac bangs Dennis' Mom, Sweet Dee Dates a Retarded Person

The Office (US): Gay Witch Hunt, Dinner Party

Frasier: The Matchmaker (Clearly not the quality of many of the shows above, but between the in-jokes and the pacing this is just perfect)

Scrubs: My Life is Four Cameras (Maybe the best take on the formulaic nature of the sitcom…ever)

    Extras: David Bowie

Oddly, with shows like Arrested Development, MASH or Cheers…I can't seem to find one that stands out as a contender, despite the fact that these are all up there quality wise. In other cases, the best episodes of a show aren't comedic ex – Scrubs, where nothing can hold top the show's more serious efforts.

** The Big Bang Theory – "The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis"

Jim Parsons (Sheldon) earns his Emmy in this episode. His explanation of how Penny's Christmas Gift to him is an obligation not a gift is hilarious. But Sheldon's reaction to that gift at the end of the episode is one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

** Family Guy – "Family Gay"

Peter adopts a mentally-challenged horse. This episode has the classic clips "Milky Surprise" and "Raped By A Clown". Google them.

** South Park – "With Apologies To Jesse Jackson"

The shows starts with Randy as a contest on the Wheel of Fortune. He is in the bonus round. His clue is "People That Annoy You". His letters are N_GGERS. He was certain he knew the answer but didn't want to say it. With the clock counting down and money on the line he says it. The crowd goes silent, the host is speechless, the whole town watching on TV is aghast. He got it wrong. The word was Naggers. Hilarious.

  • Robert Dixon@facebook

I think this needs fleshed out. If you want the best episode of a comedy series, then would it mean to be the best episode or funniest episode? Really, Look at mash, the final episode is probably one of the best shows on TV, and was the most watched for the longest time. Simpsons, really I can't name a single episode because there are too many to name. If you want a best go with anything Homer/Lisa. Futurama needs luck of the Fryish or Fry's dog. Scrubs would have to be the one with Brendan Frasier dies or maybe the one where Dr. Cox loses 4 people at once or the final episode (not the new scrubs, the real final episode at season 8 I think). And I know it will not happen but the Family Guy episode where Stewie and Brian are trapped in the bank vault.
Any Arrested Development episode is a continder for funny. Almost the same with Raising Hope. I can't name any My Name is Earl episodes off hand, but that needs added.

  • Robert Dixon@facebook

Also if you want to add the most depressing half hour on TV go for the recent HIMYM episode where Robin is talking to her kids.

M*A*S*H "Hawkeye" When Hawkeye is injured in a jeep accident and, aware he has a concussion, babbles to a Korean family to keep himself awake.

Arrested Development- "Pier Pressure" – first episode where I realized the show was something great.

Cheers- "I'm Getting My Act Together and Sticking It in Your Face" because of how Frasier rewrites Charles Dickens- or really any of the episodes where they battle Gary's Old Town Tavern.

Community- I refuse to pick one. It's like Sophie's Choice!

    30 Rock- Same as above

Seinfeld- "The Contest" (obvious but true)

Cosby Show- "Pilot" for the way the Coz faked out the audience by letting them clap for Theo's speech, and then tore it all down and showing everyone that the parents were in charge on this show.

  • Steve Austine@twitter

News Radio- Smoking. Phil Hartmann at his finest. Or i would settle for any of the first 3 series episodes.
Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia- Sweet Dee and Dennis go on Welfare.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: The Nightman Cometh
30 Rock – "Tracy Does Conan"
It's Always Sunny: Sweet Dee's Dating a Retarded Person (original Nightman/Dayman episode)

Tracy does Conan is one of the funniest 20min in tv history. Agree 100%

  • Gideon Wilde@twitter

WKRP in Cincinnati: Turkeys Away. maybe not the winner but should certainly be considered and discussed. "as God as my witness, I thought Turkeys could fly."

    • Stealth junk

Absolutely. First thing that came to my mind. IMHO the funniest line ever spoken on television!

  • calscomedyclassics

Friends – The one with the jellyfish, absolute classic.

    Father Ted – Speed 3

Everybody loves Raymond – Angry sex

TBBT – The love car displacement

But the funniest sitcom episode i have ever seen, judged by what i laughed the most at on first viewing is Only Fools and Horses – Heroes and Villains. Ive never laughed so much in my life the first time i saw the batman and robin scene!

BTW, has there been any results for this yet?

Any love for Trailer Park Boys episode "Conky" or "Mrs. Petersons dog gets f***ed up"?

Been sitting here trying to decide my favorite Simpsons and I can't do it…I could do. Top 5 but the funniest? Jeez…if u had a gun to my head, it would either be Hurricane Neddy, Homers Phobia, or Marge vs the monorail.

30 Rock – Tracy Does Conan (I've never laughed so hard at any single show)

Parks and Rec – the one where they all have the flu, can't remember the title.

Arrested dev – pier pressure tho as pilot episodes go, AD's was very strong.

Friends – The one with the embryos (the apartment bet)

    South park – Montaquilla (sp?)

I could do this all day :)
