Various Old Fogies Disapprove of Stephen Colbert's Presidential Explorations

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player
After announcing the formation of an exploratory committee to look into his possible presidential candidacy, Stephen Colbert's been busy making the rounds on news shows. First, he paid a visit to George Stephanopoulos on This Week, which mostly just feels super weird without a studio audience laughing at Colbert's ridiculousness. George Stephanopoulos isn't laughing, that's for sure. Because George Stephanopoulos is a serious journalist and George Stephanopoulos will have no part in these shenanigans! And Ted Koppel seems to feel similarly on Rock Center (below).

How can these guys not find this at all funny? I mean, when asked who he's looking at for VP, Colbert says, "I'm looking at myself right now. I read in the New York Times last week that there are three Stephen Colberts. One of those two other guys might be a good Vice Presidential candidate." You gotta admit that's a good one.

I'm confused. George Stephanopoulos grins and laughs through the entire interview with Colbert.

Koppel doesn't laugh – but I'm not sure he has ever laughed at anything on the air. He does seem to give Colbert validation for highlighting the utter stupidity and corruption of PACs.

yeah, its possible that i was overreacting because i felt so lonely without colbert's laugh track.
the general tone just felt to me like stephanopoulos was firmly opposed to having fun with the interview (refusing to answer colbert's questions for him or play along with colberts more flippant responses). his laughter seemed more uncomfortable than genuine. and koppel did give colbert credit for the political message of his faux-campaign, but there's also value in the humor of it, which i felt like he just ignored.

@Hallie Cantor I took it the be the exact opposite. It felt like Stephanopoulos was in on the joke, and the smirks were muted because it was him trying not to break character.

If he was opposed to having fun with the concept I think he'd be addressing comedian Stephen Colbert, rather than trying to get to the root of why Dr. Stephen T. Colbert is exploring running for president.

Jon Stewart and Bill O'Reilly treat each other as entertainers, in character, and seem to genuinely enjoy each other's company.

"Serious newsman" is the only character these guys have. It isn't as much fun to watch.
