Is the Comedy Podcast Scene Too Incestuous?

"We’re all kind of using the same guests," said Jimmy Pardo of comedy podcast hosts, before announcing an upcoming Never Not Funny with guests Marc Maron, Todd Glass, Adam Carolla and Chris Hardwick. Just kidding! Further opinions are aired in this article about the seriousness of comedy podcasts, from John Hodgman's notion that podcasts can't rightfully be called comedy "when you’re weeping” to Pete Holmes' point that the vast array of content means that listeners can expect podcasts to suit their ever more specific needs. Now there's a fun thought experiment: what is your specific, personal dream podcast? Mine would be the male trio of Stella plus the female trio of Mindy Kaling, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler performing comic readings of various Shakespeare plays.

No, what's incestuous is your coverage of the "comedy podcast scene." There's plenty of great comedy podcasts that you choose to ignore.

All kidding aside, comedy is about as incestuous as the Mamas and the Papas.

My dream podcast would feature three incredible comics I'd never heard of.

@Emerson Dameron@twitter How about 2 funny people instead of 3 comedians? Give Uhh Yeah Dude a shot. They seem to be entirely removed from the rest of the podcasting circlejerk.

Yes. There are so many great comics that could really use the platform and they all return to the same well. I am part of the problem. There are so many podcasts and I will often end up checking out the ones the air people I care about. Unless it is a podcast I always make a point to listen to.

This sounds ridiculous but I think I'm at the point where I would listen to a podcast that compiled the best of the prior week's podcasts (sort of like The Soup for podcasts).

I think there's definitely truth to the incestuousness of part of the comedy podcast scene. I stopped listening to a lot of them specifically because I got bored with the same guests over and over (sorry CBB!). but, there are SO MANY great podcasts I've come across that get seemingly no attention (Tank Riot) that I think the problem is much more about the narrow coverage of the same podcasts all the time.
