The Best Sitcom Episode Ever Tournament: Round One Results!

The first round of the Best Sitcom Episode Ever Tournament is officially over, and the results are in. We had some victories that could be expected, some surprising upsets, and some extremely close calls. Round two will start on Monday, and things should get even more interesting as the best of the best are put against each other with no mercy. That's how people really into competitions talk, right?

Anyways! On to the results. Below, you'll see the updated brackets followed by notes on the results and then breakdowns of each battle's final percentages.

-The closest battle was definitely The Office (US) vs. The Office (UK), which was decided by a mere four votes. Other very close matchups were The Simpsons vs. Seinfeld, Community vs. Seinfeld, and Roseanne vs. Mary Tyler Moore.
-The biggest blow-out was I Love Lucy mopping the floor with The Honeymooners, 83.9% to 16.1%. Ouch.
-The most popular poll was the close Simpsons vs. Seinfeld battle, while the least popular was WKRP in Cincinnati vs. MASH.
-The only show left with two episodes in the tournament is Community, which managed to take down both 30 Rock and Seinfeld. The only way we'll see those two Community episodes against each other is if they both make it to the finals, which I'd say is unlikely, but you never know.
-Round two voting starts on Monday!

Predictions for the next round? Trash talking? Disappointment in your favorite episode getting knocked out early? I, for one, was surprised to see the beloved Parks and Rec go down so hard. I guess it just had the bad luck of going up against the Arrested Development juggernaut right out of the gate. Poor Parks and Rec. We still love you!

SUCK IT, Parks and Rec! Also, suck it UK Office, I hope Community crushes you hard because you make me angry right now.

    • Joshua Kurp

      @Megh Wright U-K! U-K! U-K!

  • iamjustryingtolive

Always Sunny is now the Cinderella story of the tournament.

  • Ryan Ninjaboy@twitter

AGHHH I SO wanted "Last Exit to Springfield" to make it. But it's good that "Marge vs. the Monorail" made, they are both tied for my favorite episode of the whole series. I hope it beats South Park.

    • Bill@twitter

      R.I.P "Last Exit to Springfield"

  • Joshua Kurp

I still love you, Ralph Kramden.

  • Bill@twitter

The overall winner will come out of the '90s and will be either Seinfeld "The Contest" or The Simpsons "Monorail". Friends and South Park will be crushed here.

In '50s/Wildcard I expect Lucy to meet Community next round, and probably Community winning that.
In 70s/80s I'm thinking Cheers is a lock for the final four.
And 21st century has gotta be Arrested Development meeting Office UK next round, with Arrested Development making it to final four.

    • http://splitsider.com Adam Frucci

@Bill@twitter Yeah, I think "Monorail" vs. "The Contest" is going to be the most brutal matchup of the whole tournament. It's gonna be rough.

  • http://twitter.com/joshung Joshua Ungerleider

Wow, I love Community, but I don't I voted for it either time, it was against my favorite Seinfeld episode, and one of my favorite 30 Rock episodes.

Actually, round two looks to have fewer stress inducing choices for me personally.

Congratulations Sunny, you're prize is getting crushed by Arrested Development.

  • LisaS

I'm so glad Seinfeld's "The Contest" is still in the running. That episode is perfection.

  • MerBearStare

    Gordon Gartrell is so pissed.

  • Peter Davis@facebook

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but isn't "Scott Tenorman Must Die" from the 2001?

    • http://splitsider.com Adam Frucci

@Peter Davis@facebook Yeah…we put South Park in the 90s bracket before picking a specific episode. It was either that or lose a show from the 21st century bracket, I guess I thought we could sneak that one in there.

    • Peter Davis@facebook

@Adam Frucci Fair enough! I'm thoroughly enjoying this, even if my beloved P&R and 30 Rock are already out.

  • B Westof@twitter

All that I cared about made it through, although I am mildly disappointed to see the Office US go out. Glad to know it was close at least. I am predicting:
    Fawlty Towers
    Arrested Development

  • http://twitter.com/JesseDavidFox @JesseDavidFox

This tourney is all in good fun, and I'm not necessarily surprised considering its competition, but it hurts my heart to see "The Fight" go down in the first round.

Personally, I don't think I've ever laughed harder at any episode of television ever.

But more than that, I think "The Fight" will be remembered as the culmination on Television of the comic sensibility created by the UCB Theatre. It was written by Poehler and starred/guest-starred many of her disciples. The increased heightening of "the game" of the bar scene is such a pure manifestation of the now dominate comedic school of thought.

The episode didn't shove its importance/inventiveness down anyone's throat like some still on here (hello, "Remedial Chaos Theory"), it simply manifested a vision of what comedy should be.

"Marge V. Monorail" vs. "The Contest" It's what it all comes down to, kids.

  • EXP +1

sad to see no more parks in the running but even I voted against it :(
very sad to see south park beat out larry sander's flip, and south park is like the only show I've ever had merchandise from

    • Dan Bell@facebook

@EXP +1 "Flip" might not of had a chance in this tournament but it still goes down as one of (if not the best) final episodes of a comedy series.

  • Morley Zhi@twitter

Final 4: Pier Pressure / Monorail / Cheers / Community.

  • Chico Bangs

I'm happy WKRP got through, even if I don't expect it to go any further (although Fawlty Towers… that could go either way, and again. I love them both).

And Community was always going to get perhaps a disproportionate amount of love in this thing. As well they should.

  • grinning

This is really fun; and the only online poll I wouldn’t try to cheat.

But, honestly, y’all need to dial back the community-love a bit.

I knew this site appealed to inveterate community exaggerators (which are a lot like frog exaggerators), but its not one of the greatest shows ever made.

“Remedial Chaos Theory” – however heady – wasn’t very funny, there’re like two jokes in the whole episode.

30 Rock, on the other hand, has barrels of laughs.

    And beating Seinfeld?!
There is no way to articulate how wrong that is.

I know it’s a good show that isn’t getting its due, but it seems like the cabal of Harmonistas needs to gain some perspective.

I love Community, but I honestly can't believe it beat "The Marine Biologist" (which, in my opinion, is one of the 4 or 5 best sitcom episodes of all time and certainly better than "The Contest"). Anyway, here are my predictions:
    Community (Remedial Chaos)
    Fawlty Towers
Seinfeld (although I'll be voting for Friends)
    Simpsons (GO MARGE!)
    Arrested Development

  • mallory.elis@gmail.com

"The Cane" and "The Dinner Party" deserved better. We're the real monsters here.

  • Lisa Dupree@facebook

Arrested Development vs. It's Always Sunny? WHY?! WHHHHHYYYYY?!

  • Susan Elizabeth Garbett@facebook

South Park beat Larry Sanders?! Tragic. You dummy's can finish the game without me.

    • Matthew Phelan

@Susan Elizabeth Garbett@facebook FOR REAL, lady.

I'd also like to say that, in this crowd, The Bob Newhart Show vs. Party Down is not a fair fight at all. It'd be like pitting an episode of a stable sitcom like "Family Ties" against a cult-classic, generational touchstone like "Freaks and Geeks."

Is there some influx of site traffic from a retirement community in Florida that I don't know about that somehow makes this category fair?

God damn you for making this arbitrary sitcom tournament that I care about way too much!

  • CriticalMass88

So, the Larry Sanders Show and Roseanne made it on the lists, but no Married with Children? WTF?!?!

  • Michael Butterworth@facebook

That entire Always Sunny episode was ironically already done by Arrested (season 2?) where Michael dated the retarded British chick played by Charlize Theron. That show should be disqualified from the tourney for cheating.

Also, the AD episode "The Lessons" , aka the one where George Sr. hires the guy with one arm to teach his kids life lessons, woulda destroyed all of these bitches.
    Community? You're joking right?

  • akivaddict

Modern Warfare??? This is totally gonna screw up my tattoo.

  • HernandezBobby

Who writes this site? "Last Exit to Springfield" one of best simpsons episodes? Diversity Day best US Office episodes? Community being one of the best sitcom of 21st century?? Jesus Christ imma gettin outta here

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nathan-Smart/578299991 Nathan Smart

so gross to find out that the UK Office only won by 4 votes – disgusting
