Meet Kate McKinnon, SNL's Newest Castmember

Deadline is reporting that SNL just hired Kate McKinnon as a new featured player, with her first episode being the Sofia Vergara-hosted episode on April 7th. Exciting! Kate's the first new hire in a couple of seasons, and she comes straight out of the UCB Theatre in NYC. She's been in tons of web videos over the past few years in addition to being a castmember of LOGO's Big Gay Sketch Show for three seasons, so there's plenty of material out there featuring her. Here's a little primer to get you caught up before her big SNL debut.

LOGO's Big Gay Sketch Show

Kate was a castmember on LOGO's Big Gay Sketch Show for three seasons. Above, a clip of her character Fitzwilliam, a British boy who really wishes he had a vagina.

Vag Magazine

Kate played Bethany in last years web series Vag Magazine, which was centered around a group of feminists who took over a women's magazine.

Kate also starred in this UCB web series about a, well, 20-year-old who acts like a 40-year-old.

The Venture Bros/Robotomy

Kate's also done some voice work for Adult Swim, voicing Mrs. Crunchite, Teary, Exploda, Megawatt's Mom and a Flight Attendant in Robotomy and Nikki Fictel in an episode of The Venture Bros.

And if you're curious about the sorts of impressions she'll do, here's a video she made as Elizabeth Taylor:

I saw her in the CBS diversity showcase this year, she is fantastic! I am excited for her arrival to SNL.

Her physical actions (lying on the ground, raising the leg) as Fitzwilliam reminds me of Molly Shannon, for some reason.

Kate looks like someone who takes charge of a sketch, SNL needs that.

    very excited about this announcement!

"First hired in a couple of seasons"? Weren't Taran Killam and Paul Britain hired last year?

I refuse to sit still for this nonsense.

@Jonas Polsky They both were hired in 2010, at the same time as Vanessa Bayer and Jay Pharoah.

    • Jeff Countryman@facebook

@Jonas Polsky I agree. Paul Britain didn't have time to shine. He wasn't used much but he had some brilliant moments (digital video with Steve Buscemi as the sex trainer. Hi-larious.) Sad to see good ones go and others like Keenan Thompson kept for so long.

Whew! I was worried about SNL's lack of young white women.

    • Jeff Countryman@facebook

@hank merman Ha. Seriously. How many Asian-Americans have they ever had on the show? Latinos? SNL has never been diverse. Funny, at times, but never diverse.

  • Annie G.S.

She was also my favorite part of the "Silky Bibs" episode of the awesome web series I Wanna Have Your Baby that Splitsider featured in January!

    • Caitlin@twitter

@Annie G.S. I can't see her without imagining the scrunched-up, anger face she does in the Silky Bibs sketch. :D

    • Annie G.S.

@Catilin@twitter For me, it is the desperation with which she eats the chicken! I'm so excited to see her on SNL!

More proof that it never hurts to ask Paula Pell about her vagina when schmoozing for a spot. ;)
