Abby Elliott Is Not Returning to 'SNL'

Abby Elliott has confirmed that she's leaving Saturday Night Live after four seasons. It's a surprising move; while it's known that Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg have left the show, and there's been talk that Jason Sudeikis may leave as well, it seemed like the rest of the cast was all on board for the new season.

Joining the cast as a featured player in 2008, she was one of the show's youngest performers ever at age 21 as well as being the first second-generation castmember in the show's history — her dad, Chris Elliott, was on during the 1994-1995 season.

Abby had a number of memorable impressions on the show, including Angelina Jolie, Rachael Maddow, Anna Faris, Meryl Streep, Zooey Deschanel and Khloé Kardashian. She also recently co-wrote and starred in the Above Average series The Assistant and co-starred in Matt Walsh's High Road. Here are some of her best moments from the show and The Assistant:

I had no idea she was Chris Elliot's daughter. Anyway, bummed she's leaving too, I liked her.

I think she may regret this… with Kristen leaving there was a huge opportunity for a new leading lady to make some headway. Oh well.

AND it's an election year. You don't leave SNL during an election year!

Unless of course, you're Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, Maya Rudolph, Jimmy Fallon, Cheri Oteri, Colin Quinn, Tim Meadows, David Koechner, Nancy Walls, David Spade, Victoria Jackson, Siobhan Fallon, Beth Cahill, Tim Kazurinsky, Robin Duke, Joe Piscopo, Brad Hall, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Garret Morris, Harry Shearer, Peter Aykroyd, Tom Davis, Al Franken, Don Novello, Jim Downey, Tom Schiller, Paul Shaffer, or Alan Zweibel

Yeah, true. But many of those names are people who were stars and had no more room to grow on the show like Abby does. She hadn't broken out quite yet. Fallon was a star of the show. His time was up. Hers isn't. Plus, many of those names, stars and not so much stars, were let go and it wasn't their choice. There was a changing of the guard for so many of those people that it doesn't really apply here.

awh i really liked her :( why is she leaving?

  • Slutface

I was never a fan of her on the show. I hope this gives more screentime to Nasim who is seriously underused.

Now, all Nasim has to do is confirm her return.

All the good people are leaving. Super sad. Can't see myself lasting through the next season unfortunately.

Yeah, they might as well end SNL! New talent *never* joins the cast after veterans leave.

Hader, Killam, Moynihan, Nasim, Meyers and Armisen are all still gonna there next season. All the good people are leaving? No, just some of them.

    not a big loss

Really now? I would have stuck it out another year, now that theres an opening for female talent to get lots of airtime. That is of course, assuming she left of her own volition.

I liked her, I wanted to see her take on more.

I think she saw the writing on the wall and is bouncing before the press release goes out that she wasn't picked up. She seems like a nice person, but she never stood out, or had a requiring character. IMO she should've been cut earlier but the Elliot name I think let her buy time for four years. Meanwhile some other women were cut from SNL that should've stayed in her place. Same with nassim, seems nice but is just a filler cast member until they find someone better who's a girl. Bayer and the new UCB girl are 100% talented. Wig is a huge loss, and Samburg isn't. Lorne needs to use this time to overhaul the talent, and find some new blood. Meyers isn't a good head writer, and weekend update is weak. Keenan is beyond not talented, all his characters are the same-him. They need to go back to more character sketches like in the late 90s. Wig, and Hader are the only two that has kept snl afloat for 4 seasons now. Surely, if Lorne looks harder there is more talented people out there than retaining what they have.

leaving? she definitely got booted. Andy and Kristen have something going for them so i understand them quitting, but Abby's got nothing. her only funny sketch was Bein' Quirky. and with the amount of (or lack of) screen time she had, she wasnt in the running at all for the leading lady. if anything, Vanessa Bayer will be the next leading lady. shes been in more sketches than Nasim and Abby combined, and shes only a featured cast member. and lately shes been the funniest female member save Kristen Wiig.
