NBC Cancels Dane Cook Show Before It’s Too Late

In what’s been a season full of unorthodox decisions by NBC, the Peacock Network’s latest maverick move is canceling one of its new comedies before it even airs. In May, NBC ordered six episodes of a Dane Cook sitcom called Next Caller, in which the polarizing standup played a brash, misogynist radio DJ forced to co-host his show with, get this: a female feminist. Now, Deadline reports the network is canceling the show after only four episodes have been filmed (none of which will air), due to being unhappy with the series’ creative direction. Yes, NBC expected a Dane Cook sitcom to have a “creative direction.” The best part of this news is that Jeffrey Tambor played a supporting character on Next Caller and is now free to devote more time to Arrested Development’s new season. It’s highly unusual for a network to cancel a show before airing it (nets often burn off shows they don’t like in the summertime), but maybe NBC is developing a new prank show as a companion to Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, in which the network mistreats its various shows for laughs. NBC still has two midseason sitcoms, 1600 Penn and Save Me, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Peacock execs opted to make a last-minute decision to force the shows to swap titles or to air in black-and-white.

Below, find Dane Cook takin’ his frustration to Twitter with a couple of Classic Cook Quips™, and all the promos NBC released from Next Caller Please, offering our only glimpse at what the show would have been. Somebody get on it with that Facebook petition already!

After 4 episodes Next Caller has been politely asked to leave the building. I can only hope we get syndicated because that money is bomb!

Well, let's just hope he lands on his feet.

    Who is Dane Cook?

    • He'sAlright

I think he's that guy who could still sell out Madison Square Garden in a week.

        McDonalds: "Billions and Billions Sold."

        • He'sAlright

I see your point. It's the same response I would have given if a self-righteous foodie had asked "What is McDonalds?" Do you see mine?

Yes of course. Your original point was well written also!

I truly doubt he could sellout I large venue…. The 90's are over!

      He was on Louie once.

Is it still cool to dislike Dane Cook? I'll admit I have no interest in seeing a Dane Cook sitcom or movie, but the obvious bend of this site can be kind of annoying at times. I happen to like Todd Barry, Paul F. Tompkins AND guys like Dane Cook (Retaliation), Adam Carolla (Loveline). I wish the less alternative guys would get some love every now and then.

Just don't adjust the bend to the extent that find yourselves writing positive things about Carlos Mencia. There are limits to inclusion.

Y'know what, despite my wiseguy comment, I actually kinda agree. When I first saw Cook's Comedy Central Presents back like 10 years ago, I thought it was damn hilarious and I still do, as well as the first CD in Retaliation (2nd one, not so much). And though I don't feel Splitsider's bent is obnoxiously obvious, that is definitely a concern. A few years back, one of the local free weeklies where I live did a piece on Patton Oswalt, who was coming to town, and the writer opened with this real snide, "If you like comedians like Dane Cook, then you've probably never heard of Patton Oswalt." And I was all like, fuck you. Because I can form my opinions into words really, y'know, good. Again, Splitsider isn't this out of bounds, I don't think, but I'd hate to see that happen even a little bit.

        1. I agree with everything you just said.

        2. The bend isn't too bad, and considering the consistent stream of information it provides me on beloved funny people ("For free!"-unforgivable guy, remember him?), I don't have any right to complain. I just don't like the idea of aspiring comedy writers shitting on other people who have devoted their lives to comedy because the latter aren't cool or trendy. But I should recognize that this isn't exactly meant to be unbiased journalism and is, again, a free service.

        3. It's awesome to occasionally get in an online debate without epithets or rancor. I guess it helps that we agree, but still, one of us could have been snide and made this unpleasant. Thanks!

        • http://twitter.com/Jimmytheworm Jimmy Callaway

          1. Seconded.

          2. Yeah, I hear what you're saying, but that doesn't remain we shouldn't remain vigilant when it comes to this sort of thing. As much fun as shitting on people can be, it is the sorta thing smarty-pantses like us should be striving to rise above. If we indulge ourselves every now and again, it's not the biggest deal in the world, but again. Ever vigilant.

          3. Thank you! (Fuckin' asshole…)

NBC does something right once a year or so.

Whether or not you like Dane Cook seems irrelevant, because the premise of this show seems tired and cliche. War of the sexes! Will she teach him how to be more PC about women? Will he teach her to loosen up and be sexier? Probably! Also, does anyone even care about "shock jocks" anymore?

Good! this show was bound to be garbage anyways…

  • les natalie

the universe might be trying to send Dane a message…. Make fun of the meek and helpless ppl in the world and bad things will befall you….Its called karma!

You're right, that explanation makes the most sense.

  • les natalie

Fuck Dane Cook! Now he has more time to write lame fat-chick jokes…. He IS the Niger of comedy

      Niger?
