Watch David Letterman Ask 600 Musicians About Their Drums as an Inside Joke

Apparently, David Letterman has an inside joke where he asks every musician that performs on his show whether their drum set is rented or owned, and here's a compilation of several dozen times he's done that (video by Dave Shumka, comedian and host of Stop Podcasting Yourself).

It isn't a "running joke". He asks simply because he's a drummer. Many times a drummer will rent an exotic set to play for a special live performance, especially when they're going across the country for only a night. David Letterman is interested because, well hell, if I had that much money I'd be buying every beautiful set I came across. I'm willing to bet his percussive collection is as impressive as Jay Leno's automotive collection… which is why I want to be Mr. Letterman's bff.
