Comedy Central Is Offering Direct $5 Standup Special Downloads Just Like Louis C.K.

Following Louis C.K.'s lead, Comedy Central unveiled a new service today that sells standup specials directly to fans for five dollars a piece. Called CC:Stand-Up Direct, the online marketplace makes specials available to fans to download or stream across a variety of devices. 22 existing one-hour Comedy Central specials are now available via CC:Stand-Up Direct, including the latest from Kristen Schaal, Paul F. Tompkins, John Mulaney, Anthony Jeselnik, Hannibal Buress, Todd Barry, and more. All future Comedy Central specials will be placed on the service the Tuesday after they air.

While Louis C.K. had a lot of success with his $5 direct-to-fans specials, not every comedian is as popular as he he is, so it's nice to see these other great comedians be able to deliver a cheap special straight to their fans no-bullshit via a service that's very user friendly. The only difference between this and Louis C.K.'s model for the comedians involved is that Comedy Central pays for and owns these specials to begin with and they take a share of the profits instead of all of it going straight into the comedian's pocket. Comedy Central's Vice President of Enterprises, Steve Raizes, wouldn't disclose what percentage of the profits these comedians receive but tells Splitsider the comedians are "earning significantly more than they are earning on the physical [copies of the specials]."

See below for a list of all the specials currently available on CC:Stand-Up Direct:

this is so amazing using it…and they have software call Ealy Mays Artwork it is absolutely outstanding for painting.

So they're 1/3 of the price of the DVDs, they go
live the same day as the DVD releases, and the comedians get a
larger chunk of the profits? It looks like a win/win/win to me.

Yeah this is too good to be true. I don't have cable and have been sad about missing many of these specials. Buying them on iTunes is 15 bucks a pop. For an hour special of someone talking? No way, Jose. I'm going to buy like 5 of these this weekend.

Ok, but the whole point of what Louis CK did was so that he didn't have to go through the Comedy Central "Machine" anymore, right? So how is this the same thing? This literally IS the Comedy Central Machine, repackaged. And you know for each $5 download, the artist will end up seeing about $2 of it, or something similar. Comedy Central still gets their (presumably large) slice, right?
