Sarah Silverman on the Nasty Ageist Jokes from the Franco Roast

Sarah Silverman was W. Kamau Bell's guest on Totally Biased last night, and the conversation quickly turned to jokes made about her at the recent James Franco roast. Many of the jokes, and Totally Biased's response to the roast, focused on her age (she's an insanely young-looking 42), and she confided that she spent two days in bed "trying to remember [her] self-esteem" after the event:

Me being old, first of all, at the roast? — completely took me by surprise … Because it's personal, that is just so woman-based. I wasn't even the oldest one on that dais. I'm the same age as fresh-faced new star W. Kamau Bell! I feel like it's a part of, as soon as a woman gets to an age where she has opinions and she's vital and she's strong, she's systematically shamed into hiding under a rock. And this is by progressive pop-culture people! You know what I mean? It's really odd! I feel bad that it cut me. Because I should be like this about it (brushing her hand off her shoulder). I feel like your joke is that I'm still alive. My crime is not dying.

And I feel like, I just did this special and it made me think of something I said, which was — to so many women, especially when I watch Real Housewives — (muffled, through gritted teeth) which I watch, I wish I didn't, but I do — I just want to say, "Your heartbreaking attempts to look younger is the reason your daughter doesn't dream about her future!"

It's a fucking roast, groany groan groan

    • Derek_Noakes

I liked this because it's like that thing Giraldo said at that roast one time.

  • Chuck

This is pretty pathetic. Her jokes were hardly kind to the others on the deist–because it's a ROAST.

THIS is the issue that's off bounds?

    • robmoden

She didn't say it was off-bounds. If anything, she said that she should've been able to shrug it off.

She was explaining how it got under her skin because it's reflective of a real trend to push older women off-screen in Hollywood.

    • Alan

Dais, not deist. I'm a pedant, I suppose, yes, but these are two very different words. When I read your comment I spent several seconds wondering what you meant. Was Silverman making unkind jokes about a god who abandons the universe somehow unkind to the other comedians present on the dais, or stage? And so on. Blah blah blah.

  • Bhess

Isn't the age jokes about her because she looks really good for 42?

  • NYC Ed

All valid points, but when exactly did Silverman apologize for her own litany of racist and homophobic jokes?

    • Yorn

Oh, well that's different! I mean it OK for her a rich Hollywood girl to insult whatever SHE wants……..

    • CoryLE

Yeah, don't make fun of her age, that's off limits. However, she can spent her life ridiculing peoples religion… Hypocrite much?

  • lancesackless

If you can't take the insult, don't sign up to do a frakking ROAST!

It's clear that a lot of people commenting below skipped the video and are just going on that out of context quote, which seems to be intentionally misleading. Her tone in the video is entirely different from the one in my head when I read the article.

The point here isn't that the jokes were so mean, it was that she was surprised by how much they affected her. She sort of acknowledges that they shouldn't have, and that little ellipsis up there is deliberately hiding the part where she explicitly acknowledges the most important point of all: That it's hypocritical to complain about anything that was said at that roast.

Poor journalism here, and shame on the commenters for jumping to conclusions without watching the video.

      Seriously. Quote from article:

…she confided that she spent two days in bed "trying to remember [her] self-esteem" after the event.

      Actual quote:

I think that everyone that does the roast is probably in bed for two days trying to remember their self-esteem.

She's not trying to say, "I don't tell mean jokes so others shouldn't have told mean jokes about me." She's saying "I was surprised how much I was affected by these jokes."

  • EP

I think there's a lot of denial about gay men being sexist. I think the "bit" his writer did was flat out sexist. SS looks younger than the guy doing the bit.

  • Joe Mahma

    Wait… Someone got offended again?

  • GT Patterson

Um, she's commenting on what she went through, anyone want to comment to what poor Jonah Hill had to go through? Talking about how women are shamed for looking old? You know what else affects them? Fat shaming.

  • http://www.FiveFeetOfFury.com/ Kathy Shaidle

    "It's really odd!"

Hey, no, it really isn't. No neocon ever called me "baby"…

  • No Funeral

Shut up, you ancient, hypocritical skank.

  • Mr. Magorium

    Comedy is dead.

  • Mr. Magorium

"If American Airlines were smart, their slogan would be 'American airlines. First through the towers.'"

I love that joke. Mostly because it reminds me of when Sarah was young and funny and hot enough to pose for Maxim in a pair of short shorts and roller blades. Before she got all Janeane Garolfalo on us.

Take some tips from Betty White. Embrace your old age and people will embrace you back.

PS My uncle died in 911. You dumb cunt.

  • Michael Shea Butler

She is one of the few people in the world who is not allowed to be offended by such things considering her questionable career choice….

  • harley_dave

Isn't it interesting,.. all this posturing about " It's HUMOR to say this. .. but not that.. Don't focus on me… cause I'm an older woman. Let's make fun of (Christian) religion, but not Islam. These people's feet have got to be hurting from walking along the edge of that knife.. LOL

  • Anita Gerulis

Sarah Silverman is a total hypocrite. Poor Baby was offended. Blah, blah, blah.

  • Mark

If she's a Jewish atheist, why is she wearing a cross on a chain around her neck?

  • Leo DiNicola

whats the deal with her wearing a cross necklace?

  • Leo DiNicola

by the way .. "We are miracles" was horrible …. she has become so sad and unfunny … shes the titanic minutes after hitting the iceberg …

  • Mike

Silverman complaining about being hurt about a roast is sad!! she makes it all about her but yet she attacks Christ and expects people to laugh!?!?! Please……

  • KC

She is such a waste of air. People get fired for such hateful speech that she uses in her "act". Nothing she does is remotely funny. All she is doing is spreading hate and no one is screaming. Phil Robertson simply states his beliefs without hate mind you and people are screaming for him to be fired and labeled as a hate monger. So grow up….oh wait act your age and shut up whining about someone making a joke at your expense.

  • uflizzard

This is a vile woman. Personally I think she's a pig. Maybe a little dose of her own medicine will give her a moment of pause. Probably not though. She a typical self absorbed liberal.

  • angelicvh

Sick of her, you can be creative without being a jerk!!! She is nasty, and I don't like anything about her.

  • yaki534

I truly feel sorry for her parents. They must be terribly sad of how their daughter turned out .

  • Steven Chavez

many mocked the Lord and have a grand old time well the Lord most High will eternally and respectfully have the LAST LAUGH…

  • Dannyboy71

Just reading her response posted here tells me she is one confused and messed up individual with no self respect. And, she is such a vulgar person.
