Melissa McCarthy Shares Details on Her Upcoming Movies 'Michelle Darnell' and 'Just Do It'

melissa-mccarthyVariety has a cover story on Melissa McCarthy and her husband/frequent collaborator Ben Falcone, that has some new info on some of the pair's upcoming projects.

McCarthy will be starring in Michelle Darnell, a comedy that was announced last year but has kept its plot under wraps until now. The movie, based on a character she created at LA's Groundlings Theater, was co-written by McCarthy, Falcone, and Groundlings' Steve Mallory and will be directed by Falcone, who helmed McCarthy's upcoming movie Tammy.

Michelle Darnell follows "a self-help inspiration speaker (a la Suze Orman or Oprah) who goes to jail for insider trading, and struggles to reinvent herself as America’s new sweetheart when she’s released." McCarthy says. "I just could never get her out of my head. She’s got short, red spiky hair and wears a lot of turtlenecks, and from there, a script is born. We made her the 47th wealthiest woman in the world. She’s not particularly nice about it."

McCarthy also revealed that Paul Feig, who directed her in Bridesmaids, The Heat, and the upcoming Spy, is attached to direct her again in Just Do It, another previously-announced comedy that McCarthy and Falcone are writing about a wife determined to repair her and her husband's marriage via 100 days of continuous sex, based on Douglas Brown's memoir of the same name. "It becomes endearing, even though it’s about sex," McCarthy says. "It’s more about a couple trying to get their relationship back to where it was."
