Mel Brooks Would Do ‘Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money’ If Rick Moranis Was on Board
There’s been some chatter on the internet since a Reddit post went up yesterday claiming that Mel Brooks revealed on Adam Carolla’s Take a Knee podcast that he’s working on Spaceballs 2 and has approached Rick Moranis to reprise his role in the sequel to the 1987 film. While the original post didn’t include a clip or quote from the interview, this wouldn’t be the first time Brooks teased the idea of turning Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money into a reality — he told Parade Magazine last year that he would love to do Spaceballs 2 as long as Moranis was willing to come out of retirement for it: “I’ve asked him plenty of times and he’s been really strict about it.”
Brooks’s latest Spaceballs 2 update is only available to paid subscribers of Carolla’s podcast, but you can read it in full below. The topic comes up after Carolla and Brooks chat about all the amazing talent he’s worked with who have passed away and whether he’d like to make another big movie:
Maybe I could do another musical, maybe I could do another movie. I was thinking about Spaceballs the other day. In Spaceballs, in the movie, Bill Pullman says to me, Yogurt, just plain Yogurt, he says “Do you think we’ll ever meet again?” and I say “Well, I don’t know…maybe in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.” And I’m thinking now, if I did a movie that came out right after Star Wars comes out — maybe a couple of months later — I’d have a big weekend, you know? No matter what, even if it fell on its ass and didn’t get its money back…but that first weekend, the anticipation of seeing Spaceballs 2, would…I still have Daphne Zuniga and I still have Rick Moranis if he’d do it, and I’ve still got me.
It’s unlikely that Spaceballs 2 will ever happen, and that might be for the best considering John Candy and Joan Rivers are both gone and Hollywood is overloaded with sequels, prequels, reboots, and revamps these days. If Rick Moranis thinks it’s a good enough idea to return as Dark Helmet, however, it sounds like Brooks will be ready to get to work immediately. Your move, Mr. Moranis.
