John Oliver Creates His Very Own Tax-Exempt Religion on ‘Last Week Tonight’

Here’s a clip from last night’s Last Week Tonight, where John Oliver takes a deep dive into the world of televangelists and how they legally con people into making them rich through “seed faith,” where donations are tax-free and televangelists’ followers rely on the idea that wealth is a “sign of God’s favor.” Similar to Stephen Colbert’s Super PAC experiment in 2011, Oliver and the Last Week Tonight crew decided to test the legal limits of tax-exempt religion by forming a church of their very own called Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption, and with some convincing by Oliver and Rachel Dratch, you too can find salvation by giving them all your money. Be sure to check out the Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption website for more info.
