Stephen Colbert Hosts ‘The Jack Skanooni Show’ at The Second City in 1994
Welcome to The Second City Archives, in which we post an exclusive clip each week of some of comedy’s biggest superstars performing early in their careers on the legendary Chicago stage. Second City has generously given us a glimpse into their extensive archive of live performances, and over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing some rare and retro comedy never before seen on the web.
It’s a big week for fans of Stephen Colbert the talk show host between his RNC coverage on The Late Show and Monday night’s glorious return of his former talk show host alter-ego “Stephen Colbert,” but as this Second City clip shows, Colbert’s talk show host career goes much further back than his Comedy Central days. From the 1994 revue Are You Now, Or Have You Ever Been Mellow, the above scene features Colbert as the host of The Jack Skanooni Show, “the show where you get to express are they right, are they wrong, and how do we feel about it!” First up is a married couple who have taken out a second mortgage, and Jack doesn’t waste any time encouraging his audience to attack them for their decision. While The Jack Skanooni Show at first seems like any other trash talk show, just wait until the end to see what makes it stand out from the rest.
