Donald Glover to Play Lando Calrissian in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s ‘Star Wars’ Spin-Off
Last year, Lego Movie directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller signed on to direct a Star Wars spin-off centered on a young Han Solo, and they’ve added the creator and star of one of the best comedies currently on TV to the project. Lucasfilm revealed today that Atlanta star Donald Glover has joined the untitled spin-off, and he will play a young Lando Calrissian. Glover joins previously announced star Alden Ehrenreich, who has been cast as young Solo. As for Lando, the spin-off will show him “in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld — years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi.”
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” Lord and Miller said on the news. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.” The spin-off is slated for a release in 2018; it’s unknown yet how this casting will affect Glover’s work on Atlanta, which FX renewed for a second season last month.
