Trevor Noah on Joe Arpaio: “For a Guy Who’s Not Racist, Donald Trump Sure Has a Lot of Racist Friends”

Here’s a clip from last night’s Daily Show, where Trevor Noah takes a closer look at the recently pardoned Arizona’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio in a segment called “Profiles in Tremendousness: Pardon Edition.” After recapping some horrific examples of Arpaio’s long history of excessive force and abuse in his prisons as well as the over $140 million he’s cost Arizona taxpayers in legal fees, Noah explains the crime that earned Trump’s pardon – being in contempt of court for routinely ordering his officers to pull over Latino drivers purely because of their race – as well as Arpaio’s early support of Trump and the anti-Obama birther movement. “You know, for a guy who’s not racist, Donald Trump sure has a lot of racist friends,” Noah says. “It feels like Trump did this not just to reward Arpaio’s loyalty, but to send a message to all his other cronies from the campaign: ‘Hey guys, good news! We get our own set of laws. You don’t need to cooperate with Mueller and the Russia investigation – I’ll just pardon you!’”
