Ricky Gervais Refuses to Admit He's Pretty Much David Brent Now

Ricky Gervais gave a nice long interview to GQ as part of their new comedy issue, and, in it, interviewer Chris Heath takes Gervais to task for the David Brent-esque lack of self awareness he's developed over the past several years. Gervais refuses to cop to it even a little bit, just like David Brent would. Here's a clip from the interview:

GQ: You've often said one reason the character of David Brent worked so well is because he has a blind spot about how people see him. Ricky Gervais: Yeah. That's exactly what we're laughing at.

GQ: Do you ever worry that could be true about yourself? [...]

Andy Daly Talks the Art of the Character

"I’m a big fan of people who really commit to their characters and aren’t kind of winking out from behind them. I don’t think a new and different voice has to be a part of that, though. Just as long as you know the character and are really willing to invest in who that person is." - Andy Daly in an interview with Fast Company about his history of creating ridiculous and realistic characters.

Seth Rogen Stops By Your Local Library As The League's Dirty Randy

I only worked in the public library system for a short time, but let's just say this photo seems about right. Entertainment Weekly has the first look at Seth Rogen as The League's Dirty Randy, the oft-mentioned, never-before-scene porn directing buddy of Jason Mantzoukas's character Rafi. Turns out, Randy was busy staring off into the middle distance while insisting that he re-shelve all the books himself. Just let him, you guys. He's got scorpions all over his shirt.

Bill Hader Discusses Next Year's 'SNL' Goals: More Alan Alda, Less Stefon

Bill Hader is returning to SNL next season as a sort of conquering king coming back to his castle. So, does he have anything big planned for his eighth season? Simply, no, as he told Entertainment Weekly:

"I’ve learned that any time over the summer I go, 'Ooh, I got something really good,' I’ll give it to the writers, and they’ll go, 'No.' Actually, the diplomatic thing is to say, 'That’s funny… Um, what if… we do the opposite.'"

I guess it would better to ask the writers what they're planning for Hader.

"When you’re here for seven years, the writers know what you’re good at, and also what [...]

Is Liz Lemon Benjamin Buttoning?

"Over the course of six seasons, Jack has been fully transformed into a condescending, all-knowing daddy, and Liz has been fully transformed into a needy little girl who is eternally terrified of displeasing him." NPR's television blog makes the interesting argument that 30 Rock's Liz Lemon, the relatively self-possessed woman who once bought all the hot dogs to make a point, has become more immature as the series goes on, trusting her own judgment less and less and deferring to Jack – and that that's partly to blame for the show's tanking ratings. You could make the counter-argument that it's realistic of the show to let their relationship [...]

Hank Azaria's Free Agent Character Is Frank Grimes

Hank Azaria stars in Free Agents this fall using his body meat for a change, but his protagonist Alex remains sadly reminiscent of a particular late, great citizen of Springfield. "Do you remember the episode that has Frank Grimes in it? Remember that show?," Azaria naively, humbly asked Vulture. "Kind of a one-off character. This guy comes to the Springfield the nuclear power plant, works for Homer and gets really jealous that everything works out for Homer even though Homer is an idiot. There’s a lot of Frank Grimes in Alex — nothing works out for him and he’s tremendously sad and yet somehow, hopefully, it’s funny." I'm [...]

Parker Posey Describes Her 'Louie' Character as Maude+Mary Poppins+Mary Tyler Moore

"It felt like a composite of Ruth Gordon from Harold and Maude, and there’s kind of Mary Poppins, Mary Tyler Moore too, like is this for real? Is she for real? What’s going on?  What’s going on inside of this person? I had no idea! These people you meet in the city that have come from so many places, to reinvent themselves, to reinvent the moment, to change, to transform situations, she’s that. It’s a thing that is very particular to this city. And especially in Woody Allen. People have more dimensions to them than we give them credit for." - Parker Posey on Liz, her incredible character from last [...]

Pray For Marbles: Melissa McCarthy Brings Her Characters To SNL

Okay, so we can't say for sure which of her many losers and weirdos will make an appearance during Melissa McCarthy's SNL hosting gig, but suffice it to say that the Bridesmaids actress showed up to rehearsal with a boatload of characters finely honed onstage at the Groundlings. Exhibit A: Marbles, the mock turtle neck-wearing hermit genius you see before you. “If I get Marbles on SNL, you can hit me with a bus right after that and I’ll be OK,” McCarthy told The Hollywood Reporter. Can't we hit Marbles with a bus instead? Or, alternatively, take her to some sort of respiratory specialist?

Charlie Day Discusses It's Always Sunny's New, Fatter Mac

As awesome as it is Charlie Day is branching out into movies like Horrible Bosses and slowly being recognized as the comedic genius he is and so on and proud of him are all of we, America just wants to know about Fat Mac. A FAT MAC FOR EVERY POT, should be Obama's 2012 campaign slogan. Luckily Day is happy to oblige, delving into Rob McElhenney 50-lb weight gain for the upcoming season of Sunny. "Right at the beginning of the writing season, we started writing at the beginning of the new year, he said that he wanted to try to do that, and we said, [...]
