LA's stand-up scene is changing fast. In the past year alone, Scott Aukerman's live show Comedy Bang Bang wrapped up its ten-year run and popular NYC shows like Kristen Schaal and Kurt Braunohler's Hot Tub and Joe Mande and Noah Garfinkel's Totally J/K moved to town. Now, another seismic shift in the LA comedy plates is on the way as the producers of the popular stand-up show Holy Fuck announced this week that it's ending too. The free weekly show, which has been running since 2009 and is held in an old movie theater downtown, has become a pillar of the local comedy scene over the last few [...]
CBS's How I Met Your Mother was renewed for a ninth and final season last week, and co-creator Craig Thomas talked to TVGuideyesterday about the direction of the show's ultimate season. Thomas said, "It's going to be a new way to tell the story. You're never going to mistake a Season 9 episode from one of the previous eight." This statement has lead folks on the internet to predict the titular mother would be introduced at the top of the season or that she would even be narrating the entire final run of episodes. Carter didn't specify when the mother character would be brought in, but he [...]
Word came in via showrunner Greg Daniels and NBC boss Bob Greenbatt earlier this month that Steve Carell won't be back to play Michael Scott one last time for The Office's series finale in May, and now Carell himself weighs in on the issue. Talking to Access Hollywood, the actor explained, "I just didn't think it was right for the character. That character had an arc within the story and kind of grew and sort of evolved past the idea of the documentary." Carell did add that he's hoping to visit his former co-workers before production wraps though, saying, "I'm really good friends with everybody in [...]
Here's Seth Rogen and James Franco introducing the new trailer for their apocalypse comedy This Is the End (previously titled End of the World), which comes out June 14th, 2013. It stars Rogen, Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, and Craig Robinson as themselves facing the end of the world in Los Angeles. Rogen wrote and directed the movie with his longtime writing partner Evan Goldberg, and Michael Cera, Emma Watson, Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Rihanna, Aziz Ansari, Mindy Kaling, Martin Starr, David Krumholtz, and Kevin Hart also appear as themselves. The trailer is being released this week to coincide with the Mayan-predicted apocalypse and features some jokes [...]
After ten years, Scott Aukerman announced via Twitter he's ending his influential Los Angeles standup show Comedy Bang! Bang! next month. Aukerman started the standup showcase under the name Comedy Death-Ray at M Bar in Hollywood in 2002 before moving it to the then-new Los Angeles branch of the UCB Theatre in 2005. The Tuesday night show has been a linchpin of the local standup scene since it began and helped define "alternative comedy" in an era in which that term actually meant something, giving an early boost to a whole generation of now-famous standups. The live show spawned a popular podcast and IFC TV series of the name [...]
SNL cast member/head writer Seth Meyers was asked this week about the show's future once Lorne Michaels retires – not that Michaels is retiring anytime soon – and he responded by saying he doesn't think SNL can exist without his boss. Answering the question at a live chat with Bill Carter at 92Y Monday evening, Meyers hypothesized, "I don't think the show can go on without Lorne." Meyers added that it would be impossible for someone else to deal with the network as effectively as Michaels does, in addition to his duties running the show. Previous head writer Tina Fey was also asked about a post-Lorne SNL by HuffPo[...]
Last year, Jon Glaser's witness protection comedy Delocated ended its third season in a way that made a fourth season seem uncertain. Today, Adult Swim announced that the show is ending, and they're airing a one-off special series finale episode next month. Entitled "The Frrt Identity," the finale special is a half-hour long and sees "Jon" waking up on a New York shore, suffering from amnesia. It's sad to see one of the weirdest and funniest shows on TV ending, but it looks like this finale will serve as a nice ending. The episode airs Thursday, March 7th at 12:30am, but you can check out a preview after the [...]
The Office showrunner/developer Greg Daniels spoke to the press yesterday about what to expect when the show ends its nine-season run in May. Here's highlights from all the stuff he said:
Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak will return for the one-hour finale and that Zach Woods, who played Gabe Lewis on the show, will be back for one of the final episodes too.
Steve Carell, however, will not be back. Daniels says, "Steve is very much of the opinion that the 'Goodbye Michael' episode and the story arc that we did leading up to it was his goodbye and end to the show, and [...]
John Hodgman has been warning mankind about the impending apocalypse ever since his book That Is All came out last year, but things are getting close to his (and the Mayans') predicted date for the end times: December 21st. With just ten days left before we all meet our doom, check out this video of Hodgman's survival tips to make sure you know how much urine and mayonnaise to keep around the house.
"Here we are, now approaching my predictive date for the end times, December 21, 2012, which is of course not my date, but the one the Mayans have been threatening us with for a long time. And as far as I can tell, it’s very disconcerting, but if you look at the signs around, I’d hate to break this to you, but the world might not end. I think my mistake was relying on the Mayans. I mean, those guys? Come on. If they were really that advanced, they would have made a calendar out of paper, not stone. What was I thinking?"
After eight years and nine seasons on the air, The Office now has an end date: May 16th, 2013. NBC announced today that the final episode will be an hour long and will be the show's 200th installment. While Steve Carell is not returning for the finale, departed cast members Mindy Kaling, BJ Novak, and Zach Woods are all expected to return for guest spots either on or before the finale. As far as the show's final 10 episodes go, you can expect to see more of this documentary camera crew stuff and the nixed pilot for a Dwight spin-off about his family's beet farm, which [...]
It looks like long-running CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother is finally coming to a close… a year and a half from now. The network announced today that they've worked out a deal to bring all of the cast and crew back for a final ninth season that'll run from 2013-14, during which CBS confirms that audiences will finally learn of the titular mother's identity. This current season will still include Robin and Barney's wedding in May – the event where Ted meets his mystery wife – but viewers will not see all of the wedding. The press release implies that viewers won't get to see Ted [...]
The 30 Rock cast and crew finished shooting the series finale Wednesday night after working together on seven seasons of the critically-acclaimed show. Kevin Brown, who plays Dot Com on the show, tweeted this picture (embedded at its full size below) of the 30 Rock gang all together one last time. Tina Fey tells Zap2it about the last day of filming: "Last night there was a delay and as happens every time in seven years it ended up with Tracy [Morgan] singing songs from Thriller. It was the same three Michael Jackson songs so many times. Last night, it turned into an impromptu break dance party." 30 Rock's [...]
Founded in 2002, the live stand-up showcase Comedy Bang Bang (formerly Comedy Death-Ray) has been a staple of the Los Angeles comedy scene ever since (even spinning off a popular podcast and IFC TV show of the same name), but Bang Bang ended its heroic 10-year run last night with a star-studded, 4-hour Christmas show at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre. Dubbed the "Comedy Bang Bang Nativity Pageant," it's an annual event hosted by Comedy Bang Bang founder Scott Aukerman, who rounds up all of his big-shot friends for a jam-packed evening of stand-up, with all proceeds going towards feeding the homeless via the LA Food Bank. The previous Tuesday was [...]
