'Community's' First Post-Harmon Episode: A 'Hunger Games' Parody

So, how will Community be different this season, what with show creator Dan Harmon now out of the picture? Well, one thing is clear: they aren't abandoning the thematic episodes. The season premiere is going to be a big Hunger Games parody/tribute. Here's what to expect: When the Greendale student records seem to be lost, the Dean (Jim Rash) stages a Hunger Games-like competition to determine enrollment in a class called The History of Ice Cream. … Jeff not only competes in the games, he even performs an elaborate tango with Dean Pelton, who dons multiple dresses in the episode. “He will repulse and arouse you all at [...]

Things Aren't Looking Good for Poor Bent

NBC's Bent is a pretty good show! You wouldn't know that by how NBC has treated it, however: burning through an entire six-episode season in three weeks with very little promotion. And when a show is clearly being burned off, it makes people not want to get invested in it, which makes the whole thing a self-fulfilling prophecy. But it's not all NBC's fault, at least according to this breakdown of potential justifications for the network's behavior. Basically, it would cost them a whole lot to hold it over until the summertime, or to advertise it more, and they thought it would be better for people to get [...]

NBC Buys a New Comedy from The Big C Creator Darlene Hunt

Darlene Hunt, the writer/creator of The Big C, just sold a comedy to NBC based on Martin Kihn’s book Bad Dog. The book "revolves around Marty, a functioning alcoholic and TV writer-turned-management consultant whose marriage depends on his ability to control his dog Hola." I'd say that doesn't sound very funny, but seeing as her other show is about cancer, I guess this is a light topic for her.

NBC's Long-Delayed Love Bites Premieres Tonight

NBC ordered up Love Bites over a year ago, but it's just now making it to air tonight at 10pm. What happened? Well, there was some backstage drama, including the original lead and showrunner being shown the door, and then NBC was purchased by Comcast, which made things more complicated. But tonight is the night! What to expect? Well, it's an "anthology series," meaning each episode will feature a few vignettes linked thematically rather than one overarching story. It's also a romantic comedy, so expect a lot of scenes of dates and also of breakups. At this point, it'll have to do pretty well to have a shot [...]

NBC to Double its Comedy Programming This Fall With a Boatload of New Sitcoms

This will all be official come Sunday, but until then, it's hearsay aplenty. Variety is reporting that NBC is giving the greenlight to at least three new sitcoms for this fall: Whitney, Alpha Mom (formerly the untitled Emily Spivey project) and Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea. But that's not all!

NBC Picks Up Yet Another New Sitcom, This One Produced by Jimmy Fallon

NBC is on a sitcom-ordering roll; having already picked up four new series for the fall season, they just went and made it five with Guys With Kids. It's a multi-cam sitcom, unlike the other four, and it'll be executive produced by Jimmy Fallon. It'll be about "a group of dads in their thirties who don't feel mature enough to be parents, despite having kids."

Sounds promising! But boy, five new half-hour sitcoms for the fall season sure doesn't bode well for NBC's existing comedy lineup. With each new pickup the prospects of on-the-bubble shows like Up All Night and Whitney grow slimmer, and the chances of [...]

John Legend Just Sold a Sitcom to NBC

John Legend — yes, that John Legend — has sold a sitcom to NBC called Mixed Blessings. It'll be about "a prominent, black, street-bred hip-hop artist enjoying his single life who discovers that he has a teenage son and decides to connect with him and his white suburban family. The show explores the culture clash and the complicated journey of a father and son beginning their relationship as the dad soon discovers that fame, talent, and wealth get you nowhere when it comes to parenting." Legend will executive produce alongside Mike Jackson, whose childhood the show is based on.

And now here's a video preview showing a glimpse of what to expect, including a three-Tammy moonshine drinking contest that looks like it could be the greatest thing ever. Three weeks from tonight, and we get our lovely Thursday night NBC sitcoms back. Just three more weeks. Hold tight, friends. We'll get there. [via]

The Personal Politics of Parks and Rec

This year, NBC didn’t wait to renew Parks and Recreation. The shortened third season of the popular sitcom concludes tonight with a double-feature finale — the second week in a row that NBC will air two successive episodes on the same evening. A full fourth season will begin this fall.

Leading the way with the blessing of her libertarian ur-man boss Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman), the increasingly competent and confident Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) has spent this season saving and subsequently revitalizing Pawnee’s Parks and Rec Department. The show’s success seems due to its ability to weave the personal motivations of Leslie and her supporting cast into themes about [...]

NBC Has a Hit with The Voice; What's That Mean For Their Comedies?

The Voice is officially a hit for NBC: it's ratings increased 10% from its impressive debut for its second episode, beating the likes of Glee and Dancing with the Stars. Regardless of how you feel about the show, it's great news for NBC, who has needed a hit very badly for a very long time. Here's the question that's relevant to our interests: what does this mean for NBC's comedies?

On the one hand, this takes the pressure off of the Thursday night lineup to be the breadwinners for NBC, as The Voice can be the moneymaker that pays for the less popular but more prestigious fare. [...]

NBC Officially Orders Up Comedies 'Save Me' and 'New Normal' to Series

NBC is starting to fill out its fall schedule, having already ordered Matthew Perry's Go On to series and now doing the same with Anne Heche's Save Me and Ryan Murphy's The New Normal. Here's the synopsis of Save Me, which received a 13-episode order: "Heche stars as a woman in a broken marriage who transforms into a version of herself and creates miracles along the way." The New Normal "centers on a blended family made up of a gay couple (Book of Mormon‘s Andrew Rannells and The Hangover‘s Justin Bartha) and the surrogate helping them have a baby of their own."

What's not clear is [...]

OK, This Community-as-Sexual-Thriller Trailer Is Pretty Great

Cutting up TV shows into trailers for fake movies with completely different tones is something we see pretty often here on this old internet, but rarely is it done this well. I guess this is what happens when NBC does it itself instead of it just being the work of a dedicated fan. But yeah, this makes me very excited that Community is coming back next week, even if it's a completely different Community than this Community.

The First Photos of Community's Season Premiere Look Pretty Nuts

Based on these three photos from "Biology 101," the first episode of Community's upcoming season, can anyone guess what the episode will be about? Because I have absolutely no idea.

The Full Rundown on NBC's Six New Sitcoms

NBC is set to pick up a whopping six new comedies for next season, virtually guaranteeing that there will be a second comedy night on the network. Here's what to look forward to:

-Up All Night: This is the much-buzzed-about "untitled Emily Spivey project," which the SNL/Parks & Rec writer is fronting with Lorne Michaels producing. It stars Christina Applegate, Maya Rudolph and Will Arnett and is "an irreverent look at parenthood through the POV of an acerbic working mother — who never thought she’d be a mom — along with her stay-at-home husband and opinionated parents."

-Free Agents: Hank Azaria will star as "a recent divorcé [...]
