Real-life friends Patton Oswalt and Paul F. Tompkins sat down for a wide-ranging barroom chat for Tompkins's weekly MadeMan.com web series "Speakeasy." The duo, who go way back to their Mr. Show days in the mid-90s, talk about Oswalt wanting to dial down his stand-up touring so he can focus on his family, why he won't be releasing a Louis C.K.-style special any time soon, and his review of a metalcore album, which is hilarious and worth a read if you haven't seen it yet.

Christopher Guest Casts His New Comedy with Exactly Who You'd Expect Him to Cast

It’s been six long years since Christopher Guest’s last comedy, For Your Consideration, but he’s finally back behind the camera for a new HBO/BBC2 series called Family Tree, which sees Guest working in the mockumentary format that he’s done so well with in the past. The Hollywood Reporter, um, reports that Fred Willard, Michael McKean and Ed Begley Jr., all members of the Christopher Guest Repertory Company, have signed on for recurring roles, which begs the question: “Where are Eugene Levy, Harry Shearer, and Catherine O’Hara?”

Steve Martin dropped by Letterman for the millionth time last night to plug his awesome new DVD collection of his old TV specials, and more importantly, to bust David Letterman’s balls over receiving the Kennedy Center Honors way later than he did. Martin’s been appearing on Letterman’s shows for over 30 years now. Here’s his first-ever TV appearance with Letterman on his short-lived NBC morning show in 1980, when Martin and Letterman were 35 and 33 years young, respectively.
