Patton Oswalt Love-Hates New York

There is a lot of beautiful stuff packed into Genevieve Koski's Patton Oswalt interview at the A.V. Club, including Patton's complete and utter disdain for living in New York. "I would open the doors to the hotel in the lobby, and even the two doormen would look back, like, 'All right, dude, here it comes,' and just this wave of garbage air would pummel you," Patton says, describing his current three-month stint in the city. "It was like a shockwave of stink. I was almost excited to do it in the morning to see what new, horrible smell would come down there."

Despite smelling like the hot, wet [...]

Judd Apatow Producing a Movie by Once Director John Carney Starring Scarlett Johansson

Here's a weird combo of people working on a project together: John Carney, the director of the indie musical Once, is working on a new project called Can a Song Save Your Life? that's being produced by Judd Apatow. And he just cast Scarlett Johansson as the female lead. The plot: "Set in New York, the film tells the story of a washed-up A&R man who forms a passionate bond with a young singer-songwriter (Johansson) from out of town." Apparently Jim Carrey and Mark Ruffalo are both rumored for the male lead.

Trying to Know Mitch Hedberg

The following is excerpted from Mike Birbiglia's Sleepwalk with Me, specifically the chapter about his experiences touring with his hero, Mitch Hedberg.

One night Mitch was onstage and in the middle of his set he said, "Oh no, I got to go to the bathroom. Can someone come onstage and tell a joke?" There was this long gaping silence, then he said, "I'm serious, you guys. I really gotta go." And it's still silent. People didn't know what to do.

Backstage I turned to Lynn and said, "Are you gonna go up?"

"Will you?" she said.

"Okay."

I walked onstage and approached Mitch. He didn't know I was [...]

Why We Relate to Louis CK

Louis CK is having a great year. A tremendous year, arguably his best. Between the theatrical release of his new stand-up special Hilarious and the critically-acclaimed, fan-adored FX series Louie, the comedian is at the top of his game. He's selling out venues nationwide, delivering phenomenal performances that pushes envelopes but stays grounded in brutal, highly literate honesty. He's breaking down walls, cutting through stale, watered-down programming, and redefining what's possible on network television.

We're witnessing a comedy revolution, and a 42-year-old divorced father of two is at the helm.

Ken Marino on Party Down, Reunions Of All Kinds and His Denim Short Shorts

The Party Down reunion on Childrens Hospital airs tonight, and Ken Marino is already looking back on the laughter and the tears. "It was bittersweet because all of us who worked on Party Down know how special and wonderful that was, and we still are a little sad that it didn’t go any further," he tells Vulture. "So it was kind of cool to see everybody back in their uniforms and doing their parts, but then it was sad because it’s a short little piece that we did on an eleven-minute show. When it ended, we were all like, 'Goddamn it.'"

While Marino didn't have an update, [...]

Inside Weird Al's Comeback

This past weekend, Alfred Matthew Yankovic, better known as “Weird Al” Yankovic, appeared at All Tomorrow’s Parties’ Nightmare Before Christmas, which is to music nerds what the Borscht Belt once was to comedy fans. He was handpicked to perform by curators Godspeed You! Black Emperor, a band so loved that no one every called them out on naming one of their albums Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven. This ultimately begs the question: is Weird Al cool again?

The most important part of that sentence is “again.” From 1988-1999, Weird Al could do no wrong. During that time, he released Even Worse, UHF, Off the Deep End, [...]

Greg Giraldo on Failure

In light of his tragic death yesterday, this interview he did on feelings of inadequacy and failure with Psychology Today last year is a tough read:

I'm a total fuckup, honestly. The reality is I'm not this person with this driving "get it done" attitude. I'm a complete fuckup and I've fucked up a lot of things in my life. I'm constantly tortured by a sense of failure. I feel like quitting all the time. I feel like hiding in drugs or alcohol. I feel like I've failed in terms of what my potential is. I don't think I've achieved my potential because I haven't worked that [...]

Joel McHale on Stand-Up, Steve Martin And Carrot Top as a Beacon to The Children

Joel McHale is much more than just a condescending smirk, though to be fair that smirk is what's keeping his family in chicken dinners and new school pants. In addition to discussing Community and The Soup with Collider, McHale reveals how he got started on his three-year-old stand-up career: "The money was terrific. No. My booking agent said, 'If you put a set together of Soup jokes and you start building an act, you will have an instant audience because people follow the show and you’ll make a lot of money.' And I was like, 'Really?!' So, I started doing that."

While he's currently promoting his upcoming [...]

Christopher Walken's Letter to His Fans Is Just Great

This is a letter from Christopher Walken to the members of his fanclub, type written and mailed out in August of '04. It is very charming, especially read in your head in his voice. It makes me wish that I knew about the Online Christopher Walken Fan Club before, as, while I'm not a big club-joiner, this might be one that I'd make an exception for.

Mindy Kaling Is Going to Save the Romantic Comedy

NY Mag has a great new profile of The Office's Mindy Kaling, in which she hints that she'll be leaving the show with Carell. Which makes sense! She's a stellar writer and should have a great career ahead of her writing and acting in her own projects. She's currently writing The Low Self Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie for Mandate Pictures and she's got a book of humor essays coming out as well.

“This isn’t some big scoop or anything, but I can see this season being my last. Right now, I’m hankering for new adventures … Ninety percent of the time I’m having romantic-comedy fantasies in which I’m [...]
