Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Art Girls Are Easy' by Julie Klausner

This week Julie Klausner’s new book Art Girls Are Easy is out and available to be ready by you. Art Girls is Klausner’s second book, following the How Was Your Week host/Billy on the Street writer/Vulture contributor’s 2010 heartache-chronicling memoir I Don’t Care About Your Band. After Klausner announced the novel’s release date in March, Rookie ran an excerpt from of the novel, which takes place at an all-girls arts camp. If you enjoy Klausner's aforementioned podcast or writing, or just like reading about smart young girls, this is a book that you should read.

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Repo Man' Criterion Collection

Owning a 1980s cult classic comedy sci-fi action movie on DVD can be fun, but owning a copy of that same movie on a Criterion Collection DVD can be even more fun, especially if your idea of fun is having pretty DVD cases lined up on your shelf. This week the Criterion Collection adds the 1984 Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez-starring Repo Man to its catalog, and the sweet new restored version of the movie available on DVD and Blu-Ray comes complete with a lot of extras like interviews and conversations with the director, other filmmakers, and some of the musicians from the soundtrack including Iggy [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'I Can Barely Take Care of Myself' by Jen Kirkman

A lot of people ask stand-up comedian Jen Kirkman about when she’s going to have a baby, even though she doesn’t have any interest in doing so. In order to better explain herself, she's written a book about it. In her new book I Can Barely Take Care of Myself: Tales From a Happy Life Without Kids, Kirkman writes about her choice to live child-free, especially in the face of a lot of people all the time asking her why she’s made that choice. A few weeks ago Simon & Schuster released the first thirty pages to read on the Internet, but now you can have a [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: ‘Questions I Ask When I Want to Talk About Myself’ by Mindy Kaling

A lot of comedians write memoirs or make their own TV shows, but Mindy Kaling’s already done both of those so now she’s made some conversation cards, too. The box set, entitled Questions I Ask When I Want to Talk About Myself, comes with 50 cards suggesting topics to talk to people about, ranging from best friend rights and responsibilities to guys being perfect. Maybe this will be the hip new medium for comedians to put their comedy out on, or maybe it won’t, but either way this is something you’ll probably enjoy if you were a fan of Kaling’s recent bestselling memoir.

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: '30 Rock' Season 7 on DVD

30 Rock ended earlier this year, and although it won’t return for an eighth season, its existing seven seasons are available from now until forever to watch on DVD, with season seven just coming out this week. 30 Rock is, of course, a show that packs enough jokes per second in an episode that it truly rewards rewatching. Season 7 saw Liz Lemon get married, Kenneth advance in the workplace, and Alec Baldwin live a life of single-fatherhood, with as-always stellar comic performances from Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski, Scott Adsit, Judah Friedlander, and more. This DVD box set is definitely worth a buy, especially if you already [...]

And though the show just came out last week, it's already available on CD + DVD combo pack. Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: A New, Complete Guide to 'Monty Python's Flying Circus'

There’s guides to Monty Python’s Flying Circus, and then there’s more specific and complete guides to Monty Python’s Flying Circus. This new two-volume collection, titled Monty Python's Flying Circus: An Utterly Complete, Thoroughly Unillustrated, Absolutely Unauthorized Guide to Possibly All the References from Two Sheds Jackson to Zambesi probably falls under the latter category, even if it's only because that name makes the collection sound very important. The first book covers episodes 1-26 of the celebrated television show and the second one covers episodes 27-45. The two books cost about 15 dollars each, making the guide a good investment if you want to delve deep into the [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'Carrie and Me: A Mother-Daughter Love Story' by Carol Burnett

Carol Burnett's new memoir Carrie and Me: A Mother-Daughter Love Story comes out this week and is now available as hardcover, Kindle, and audiobook. In the book, Burnett recounts her experience of motherhood in the televised comedy spotlight. Her daughter Carrie won over Burnett's audience with kindness and charm but struggled with personal issues and addiction. Burnett and her daughter went public with Carrie's addiction and her eventual recovery, and the girl acheived success in adulthood, but after battling with cancer Carrie died in 2002 at the age of 38. Burnett's touching tribute to her daughter is an opportunity to read a talented [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: Kristen Schaal – Live at the Fillmore

Kristen Schaal has been a stand-out star on TV for a long enough time — in live action shows like Flight of the Conchords and The Daily Show as well as cartoons like Bob’s Burgers and Gravity Falls — that it’s hard to believe that Live at the Fillmore is her first full-length standup special. But even if it’s surprising, it’s true; this week Comedy Central is releasing Schaal's debut Live at the Fillmore on DVD. In addition to Schaal's one-hour special, the DVD also features material from her performances on Comedy Central Presents and John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show, and her favorite appearances on The [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: ‘Dad is Fat’ by Jim Gaffigan

Jim Gaffigan wrote a book. It's out this week, it's called Dad is Fat, and it's a memoir about his experience with marriage and raising five children in New York City. Considering the fact that CBS ordered a pilot from Gaffigan also based on the standup and actor's real-life experience of marriage and raising five children in New York City, you can rest assured that he knows enough about the subjects of marriage, fatherhood, and the difficulties of Manhattan residential life to write a whole book about them while also being funny.

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: ‘Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls’ by David Sedaris

This week humorist David Sedaris has a new book out called Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls. The collection marks Sedaris’s return to his celebrated style of unique personal essays found in his previous books like Me Talk Pretty One Day, Naked, and When You Are Engulfed In Flames after his recent foray into fable-like short stories about animals with his 2010 collection Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk. This newest title also has an animal in it, but the book's not necessarily about talking animals, unless maybe Sedaris has encountered one in real life, which could be interesting. His regular non-fiction stories [...]

One new release in books this week is A Companion to Woody Allen, the latest of the Wiley-Blackwell Companion to Film Directors series. The book is edited by two renowned Woody Allen experts and collects 26 different essays on the director and his films, covering topics like Allen’s influences as a filmmaker, his relationship to his onscreen persona, and his portrayal of [...]

Fun Thing to Buy of the Day: 'John Dies at the End'

Starting this week sci-fi horror comedy John Dies at the End is available on DVD and Blu-Ray. The movie, based on Cracked senior editor David Wong's 2007 comic horror novel of the same name and directed by Don Coscarelli, the same guy behind sci-fi horror comedy and semi-comedy movies Bubba Ho-Tep and Phantasm, is about two college dropouts, a psychedelic drug called Soy Sauce, and demons. Paul Giamatti also stars in and produced the movie, which had a lukewarm response from some critics but got a bit of a cult following, too, and also Julie Klausner and Vulture made this video of Giamatti [...]
