NBC Wins Bidding War over New Michael J. Fox Sitcom By Offering 22 Episodes Sight Unseen

A week ago, we reported that all the major networks were chomping at the bit to get the rights to a new sitcom Michael J. Fox was pitching. Last night, NBC surprisingly vanquished its competitors by offering a full 22-episode season right off the bat, no pilot necessary. ABC had the advantage going into the war because they could offer the coveted post-Modern Family slot; however, NBC's offer was just too nuts to pass up. Shows just don't get full-season pickups anymore. It was a ballsy but not entirely unbelievable move for NBC. Sure, they have no idea what this show will look or be like but they're [...]

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin to Team Up For Vague New Movie, Maybe

This is how your comedy sausage gets made: after Steve Martin made a cameo during Alec Baldwin's SNL monologue two Saturdays ago, Adam Shankman, who directed the duo when they hosted the Oscars together, thought "hey, those two should make a movie together and I should be involved." And now, that is something that seems like it might happen, with Shankman directing and New Line interested. What would the movie be about? As specific as anyone can get at this point is that it'll be "a bit of Trading Places meets Grumpy Old Men." Haha, OK! Sure, that's almost a movie idea.

So, to recap: the screenplay [...]

Will Ferrell to Play "a narcissistic hedge fund manager who thinks he has seen God."

Alan Cohen and Alan Freedland, the guys who wrote Due Date, just sold a new script called Swear to God to Warner Brothers. Apparently, Will Ferrell is attached to star and Adam McKay is in talks to direct, and it'll be "a buddy comedy in which Ferrell plays a narcissistic hedge fund manager who thinks he has seen God." I wasn't a big fan of Due Date, but that sounds like a pretty promising premise. We'll see!

Melissa McCarthy Just Sold Her Second Pilot to CBS in Four Months

Melissa McCarthy is on some kind of crazy world domination trip, man. She's already sold one pilot to CBS a few months back, and now she's sold another one about a 37-year-old man who moves back in with his parents. To be fair, McCarthy's only an executive producer of this latest script, which was written by her husband/Bridesmaids costar Ben Falcone and fellow Groundlings alum Larry Dorf. But still. This woman is taking over the world! And the world is like, "Yeah! Take us over! We love you!" And she's like "Okay!" And the world is like, "Yay!"

Jack Black to Murder Shirley MacLaine in Richard Linklater's Bernie

I looks like Richard Linklater's latest, Bernie, is going to be coming to theaters at some point in the near future. The dark comedy starring Jack Black was just bought by Millennium. "Inspired by a true story, the film stars Jack Black as the title character, an amiable funeral director who kills a rich widow (Shirley MacLaine) and creates a ruse that she's still alive." Also, Matthew McConaughey is in it! OK, I'm listening.

Area Man Interested to See What Shows The Onion Will Develop for CBS Under New Deal

The Onion is branching out: "The Onion, best known for its fake-news newspaper and Web site, has signed a one-year first-look development deal with CBS Television Studios. Under the pact, The Onion’s creative team will develop ideas for non-Onion-branded broadcast comedy series as well as online series for CBS Interactive's digital properties."

Tom Hanks' New Movie, Ladies Selling Comedies, and the First Family Sitcom

So many new shows being bought and sold today! What is this, folks, the television show stock market? Wait, please don't leave. Can we start over?

Tom Hanks is working on a half-hour comedy for HBO about college athletes called Players. With Entourage over and Curb probably winding down, it makes sense that HBO is trying to find strong new comedies.

More ladies are selling comedies too! Jennifer Crittenden and Gaby Allan sold ABC Don't Panic, about "a group of female friends navigate the ups and downs of post-college life in New York City, all while suffering through an endless cycle of weddings and bridal showers." It's [...]

NBC Re-Ups With Netflix for a Few More Years of Streaming (Older) Shows

NBC has re-signed its agreement with Netflix for a few more years, ensuring that past seasons of shows like 30 Rock and Parks and Rec will be available for streaming, as well as new movie additions like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Great! But no more next-day stuff; everything will be delayed by a season, which is too bad.
