Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, and John C. Reilly to Re-Team for 'Border Guards'

After their successful collaborations on Step Brothers and Talladega Nights, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are currently in talks to star in Border Guards, Deadline reports. The film will be written by Jesse Armstrong (In the Loop, Peep Show) and follows Ferrell and Reilly as "two hapless but earnest friends who decide to give purpose to their lives by protecting America’s borders from illegal immigrants. In the process they find themselves accidentally stranded in Mexico without identification and must sneak back into the U.S." McKay has been reportedly eyeing to direct the film, but the trio's attachment has not yet been made official. McKay and Ferrell's Gary [...]

'Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues: Super-Sized R Rated Version' Is Coming February 28th

During his visit to Jimmy Fallon on last night's Tonight Show, Will Ferrell confirmed the news that on February 28th, an alternate R-rated version of Anchorman 2 will hit theaters for one week. The film will be notably longer than the 1 hour, 59 minute original and include a whopping additional 763 more jokes. Writer/director Adam McKay — who teased of the alternate Anchorman 2 idea back in October — released the following statement when the film was announced:

When my editor told me we had a whole different version of the movie that was more than two hours long with nearly 800 new jokes, I [...]

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions Adds Female-Centric Label Gloria Sanchez

With the exception of 2012's Bachelorette, Adam McKay and Will Ferrell's production company Gary Sanchez isn't exactly known for making female-driven movies, but according to Deadline, that's all about to change as the company has added a sister label aptly named Gloria Sanchez Productions. Longtime Gary Sanchez executive Jessica Elbaum — who has worked as producer on Step Brothers, The Other Guys, Casa de mi Padre, Bachelorette and most recently Anchorman 2 — will head the label and seek out female voices for Gloria Sanchez projects in the vein of Bachelorette and the upcoming movies Tammy starring Melissa McCarthy and Welcome to Me starring Kristen Wiig. No word [...]

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay Tried to Get Barack Obama to Cameo in 'Anchorman 2's Big Brawl

In a new interview with Paste magazine, Anchorman director/co-writer Adam McKay revealed that he and Will Ferrell tried to get a bunch of super lofty cameos for Anchorman 2's big news anchor brawl, including Oprah Winfrey and presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Here's McKay explaining what happened:

We drew up a wish list of all the people we wanted and what we ended up with was basically our wish list. It has never happened before. Usually you do your dream casting and you get 30 or 40 percent of the people. In this case they all said, “Yes.” It was insane. When they started saying, “Yes,” I [...]

'SNL' Review: Paul Rudd's 'Anchorman' Ad

The most beloved SNL hosts over the years can make sketch comedy magic with anyone. Justin Timberlake, for example, seemed to hit it off so well with Jimmy Fallon in the early 2000s, but even after Fallon left the show, Timberlake still hosted stellar episodes with whichever lineup of actors and writers happened to be working those seasons. Alec Baldwin is another example — despite being famous for his Scoutmaster and Schweddy Balls bits, Baldwin has never been dependent on any particular writer or cast member to make him look good. Baldwin understands that it's about making everyone else look good, and that's why he's hosted the show 16 [...]

Adam McKay Is Directing a Movie About the Economic Crisis

Writer/director Adam McKay (Anchorman(s), Step Brothers) has found his next movie. McKay has signed on to develop Michael Lewis's book, The Big Short: Inside The Doomsday Machine, into a movie, which he will direct, THR reports. The nonfiction book, published in 2000, documented the housing and credit bubble. Brad Pitt's company, Plan B, will produce. "Michael Lewis has the amazing ability to take complex formulas and concepts and turn them into page turners," McKay said. "Plan B and I connected over that breathless quality the book has. Very excited to jump into this."

McKay recentled told Empire about being excited to adapt the book:

It’s the best book [...]

Steve Carell Says Paramount Shut Down the 'Anchorman' Broadway Musical Idea

During a recent interview on the podcast A.D.D. Comedy, Steve Carell revealed an interesting tidbit about Adam McKay and Will Ferrell's original intention to stage the Anchorman sequel as a Broadway musical before developing it into a film:

When they first talked about a second Anchorman, the original idea was to do it as a Broadway musical. They were legitimately considering this. So Adam McKay and Will Ferrell contacted us and said "What do you think about we go to Broadway, we do a Broadway musical Anchorman 2, and like the Marx Brothers we sorta work out all sorts of bits while we're doing the stage play, [...]

NBC Orders 3 Pilots from Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, Dan Mazer, and J.J. Philbin

NBC has ordered three more pilots including one from McKay and Ferrell's Gary Sanchez Productions, Deadline reports. The first pilot Love Is Relative is a multi-camera comedy written by Borat/Bruno co-writer Dan Mazer and co-produced by Tom Werner about "a wife and husband who begin to see their marriage in a whole new way after her newly divorced brother moves in."

The second pilot, titled Ellen More Or Less, is a single-camera show written by J.J. Philbin and produced by Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood) that follows "an average-size woman who, after losing 100 pounds, begins reinventing herself in life and love." Loosely based on the [...]

Here's a Peek at Last Night's 'Anchorman 2' Premiere

In case you have a little more room in your brain for Anchorman 2 promotion, the US premiere happened last night at New York's Beacon Theatre, complete with a fancy red carpet lineup of the film's stars and a handful of other entertainment reporter bait. Here's a recap of the night from Splitsider's post near the end of the press line, complete with photos and a few quotes from the attendees.

Adam McKay Says 'Anchorman' Is the Type of Thing He Would Have Gotten In Trouble For Writing at 'SNL'

Will Ferrell has certainly been making the rounds as Ron Burgundy to promote the upcoming Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,  and now director Adam McKay is talking more about the long awaited sequel. In an extended editing room interview on Collider, McKay and his editor Brent White talked about making their longest film ever (the first cut was 4.5 hours), why Seth Rogen is useless in a test audience, and not over-using Steve Carrell's Brick character:

He’s definitely the Harpo Marx of the team in the sense that he has no rules whatsoever to him.  He can step out of scenes.  He can comment on scenes.  He can look at [...]

Adam McKay Says There Won't Be an 'Anchorman 3'

Adam McKay, who directed both Anchorman movies and co-wrote them with Will Ferrell, said in an interview with Empire that the Anchorman series is over. Here's what he said:

"It’s done. I think that’s it. It was great to do it and it was so fun to work with those guys again, but I think that’s it for Ron Burgundy … No, that’s the last sequel we’re gonna do. There’s nothing more fun to me than new characters and a new world. And now we’re releasing this alt version, we’re totally satisfied. No Anchorman 3."

When asked if he'd ever consider doing another Anchorman in 10 years, McKay [...]

Taking a Closer Look at the Female-Centric Gloria Sanchez Productions with Founder Jessica Elbaum

Comedy's infamous lack of gender (and racial) diversity has remained a relentlessly discussed issue lately, especially since SNL made the bizarre decision to hire a batch of no less than five white male cast members in the fall, took the brunt of the internet backlash that followed, and worked to fix the problem by holding emergency black female auditions. On the other hand, just last week Jerry Seinfeld got touchy when asked why most of his Comedians in Cars guests are white males, which he punctuated with a damning question: "Who cares?" Those two words blew up the internet.

But now the kicker: Gloria [...]

Adam McKay's 9 Favorite 'SNL' Sketches He Wrote

Before he became one of the country's leading comedy directors, helming films like Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers, Adam McKay spent six years working on Saturday Night Live. Hired on as a staff writer in 1995, he was promoted to head writer in 1996, a position he held until handing it over to Tina Fey in 1999. McKay then became the show's resident filmmaker. He asked for — and got — the absurd job title "Coordinator of Falconry" and was able to do whatever he wanted on the show until he left in 2001 to make movies.

During an AMA on Reddit to promote his latest movie, Anchorman 2, [...]

Why Is 'Anchorman 2' Being Promoted So Hard?

No comedy in movie history has ever been promoted as hard as Anchorman 2. We're still a week away from the film's release, but we're two months into a massive publicity blast featuring Will Ferrell and his costars making a slew of appearances all over the TV and internet as their characters from the original, plus a ton of promotional tie-ins. There's an Anchorman Ben & Jerry's flavor, a Ron Burgundy "memoir," an exhibit at Washington D.C.'s "newseum," Emerson College renamed its communications school after Burgundy for a day, Ferrell filmed 70 spots for Dodge in character as Burgundy, he released an anti-piracy PSA, [...]
