Plumbing Politics and the Crazy State of the World for Comedy with Andy Zaltzman

Andy Zaltzman is best known in the States as half of the excellent satirical podcast The Bugle, which he co-hosts with long-time collaborator John Oliver. A lover of all things satire, he's hosted his "Political Animal" show for years, and his new show, "Satirist for Hire", adds a twist to the format. For each show, audience members request topics for him to satirize with his sharp, pun-loving wit; topics range from war and government policy to sports and fashion trends. I caught up with him at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to talk about audience suggestions and why The Bugle will last forever.

You’ve been coming up to the Fringe for 15 years. What’s the [...]

The Bugle Takes On News Corp….From Inside News Corp.

During the closing of The News Of The World, The Bugle podcast somehow managed to rip on the beast from inside the belly of that same specific beast. Published by the Times of London, a part of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., the news satire podcast run by Andy Zaltzman, John Oliver and editor Chris Skinner went to town over the folding paper, which they noted “would not be missed at all" and the subsequent hacking scandal. “It was comedian’s gold, but an editor’s nightmare,” Skinner recalls. After an episode spent gloating over Murdoch getting hit with a shaving cream pie, a disbelieving John Oliver wondered, “Should this [...]

Inside John Oliver's Other Weekly Satirical News Show, 'The Bugle'

John Oliver's new late night show, Last Week Tonight, premiered yesterday on HBO. It’s obviously a big step for the British expat, formerly of The Daily Show, but in practice, it might not be as big of a challenge for Oliver than you might think. That’s because, on top of being a correspondent for The Daily Show, he’s already been doing a weekly satirical news roundup for nearly seven years now on his podcast, The Bugle.

The Bugle is one of the longest-running and most consistently hilarious podcasts on the internet. Launched in 2007 under the auspices of Rupert Murdoch’s London newspaper The Times, it’s a delightfully cheery review of the [...]

A Fairly Comprehensive Guide to Comedy Podcasts: The Bugle

It was clear in reading through the comments section of the first Guide to Comedy Podcasts that I had inadvertently ignored a lot of tenderly beloved examples of the format. In an effort to rectify the oversight, I’m now taking a weekly look at which of these are worth your valuable time and which ones are ruining it for everybody. This week’s featured podcast is The Bugle.

The conceit of The Bugle is laid out right in the tagline: “An audio newspaper for a visual world.” Basically it’s the podcast equivalent of The Daily Show and The Onion, but British, and with a little Monty Python-style absurdity thrown [...]
