'BoJack Horseman' Creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg Breaks Down Comedy's "Default Male" Problem

BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg has been fielding questions from fans via his Tumblr this week, and his most interesting response yet comes from an anonymous question that referred to a female character (a crocodile voiced by Kulap Vilaysack) as male. Bob-Waksberg used the mix-up to illustrate "the tendency for comedy writers, and audiences, and writers, and audiences (because it’s a cycle) to view comedy characters as inherently male, unless there is something specifically female about them." While he admits to struggling with this tendency himself, he says his approach to gender on BoJack Horseman has changed largely thanks to working alongside head designer Lisa Hanawalt:

Seth Rogen's R-Rated Animated Comedy 'Sausage Party' Is Moving Forward, Coming in 2015

For the past few years, Seth Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg have been working on a raunchy animated comedy called Sausage Party, and Sony Pictures announced today that the project is moving forward. Sausage Party stars Rogen as the voice of a sausage who falls out of his shopping cart in the supermarket and goes on a quest, with his new friends, to get back to the shelf for the store's 4th of July sale. Conrad Vernon (Monsters vs. Aliens, Shrek 2) is directing the movie. Phil Hartman's Comedy Album Is Being Turned Into an Animated Movie

In the late '70s, nearly a decade prior to landing on Saturday Night Live, the late Phil Hartman recorded an album called Flat TV, consisting of him performing various characters and sketches. The album was lost and unreleased until Hartman's brother John dug it up and put it out on CD in 2002, and now, an animation studio is developing it into a film. Worker Studios has teamed up with Phil's brother Paul Hartmann (Phil dropped the extra 'n' at the end of his last name when he went into show business) on the project. Rashida Jones and Will McCormack Are Writing 'Toy Story 4'

Writing partners Rashida Jones and Will McCormack just added a big movie project. Slash Film reports that they've signed on to cowrite Toy Story 4, the latest sequel to Pixar's megahit franchise after the original film in 1995 and two sequels in 1999 and 2010. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the news that Pixar will release the film on June 16, 2017 with original director John Lasseter onboard to direct. The new animated comedy The Lego Movie is coming out this weekend, but the studio behind it has already started work on a sequel. The Wrap reports that Jared Stern (The Internship, Mr. Popper's Penguins) has been hired to co-write the sequel with an unnamed writer. Here's the trailer for The Lego Movie a new computer animated adventure comedy from Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directing team behind Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the 21 Jump Street reboot. Tim Minchin Is Writing the Music and Lyrics for a DreamWorks Animated Film

Comedian Tim Minchin has been tapped by DreamWorks to do the music for a new animated film, the studio announced last week. The movie is set in Australia, where Minchin grew up, and it's called Larrikins, which is Australian slang for mischievous youth. Larrikins follows a marsupial venturing out of his family's burrow for a musical adventure across the Australian outback.
