The Episodes of 'SNL' Season 39, Ranked

With SNL's 39th season coming to a close, we're taking a look at the past season with a series of posts examining the highs, lows, and other memorable moments from the past eight months. Here, we look at each episode as a whole, ranking them in order of overall success and positive resonance with viewers.

Obviously comedy is subjective, and everyone watches SNL looking for different things — this list is just one of many you can find online. As far as we're concerned, things like musical guests, surprise cameos, and drama surrounding the show are less important than the plain-and-simple comedy aspects of an episode: How many sketches had [...]

Anna Kendrick is 'SNL' Illiterate in These 'SNL' Promos

Here are this week's SNL promos featuring Taran Killam and first-time host Anna Kendrick. Killam and Kendrick jam-pack these four minutes with great concepts like monkey butlers, bacon bikinis, musicals, show tunes, and plenty of one-upmanship. Even though Kendrick doesn't seem to understand what SNL is, these promos hint that she's going to be great anyway.

Has anyone ever had more fun than these people? Seriously. This is the most fun ever had. (Watch the behind the scenes after the jump.) All fun, from here on forth, should be measured in terms of this music video. "Hey bro, how was the party last night?" "Oh, pretty OK. Like 15% the 'Do It Anyway' video."

Director Joe Swanberg Secretly Shot a Movie with Lena Dunham and Anna Kendrick Last Year

Writer/director Joe Swanberg, who made Hannah Takes the Stairs and the upcoming summer release Drinking Buddies, made a movie last year that the public didn't know about until this week. Swanberg revealed to Indiewire that in December, he filmed an independent movie tentatively called Happy Christmas that stars Anna Kendrick, Lena Dunham, Melanie Lynskey, and Mark Webber. Details about the movie are few and far between but it is set in Chicago, "focuses on a family and is set during the holidays." The director hopes to take Happy Christmas to festivals in 2014, meaning that non-festival folk will probably be able to see it later next year.

The Trailer for the Kay Cannon Scripted 'Pitch Perfect' Is Pitch Solid

There are some trailers where you can just hear the studio executives' conversation:

Exec 1: "Ok, Glee is really popular with kids. Am I saying that right, "kids?" What should we do?" Exec 2: "There's this book called Pitch Perfect that's just like Bring It On, but, wait for it, with singing!" Exec 3: "Who will be in it?" Exec 4: "Anna Kendrick?" Exec 1 and 2: "Perfect!" Exec 3: "Pitch Perfect." Exex 1, 2, 3, 4: "Hahahahahahahahah" [Then they laugh and throw money at each other for eternity]

However, 30 Rock writer and all-around funny person, Kay Cannon wrote it, so it could/should be better than expected. At minimum, you might [...]

'SNL' Review: Princess Anna Kendrick

Whenever SNL producers book a host who seems inexperienced in live comedy, they fall back on a kind of playbook. Stick to popular recurring bits and pretaped videos to take the burden off the host. Give her small, easy stuff that plays to her strengths, then get her out of there. If she can sing, let her sing. The goal is to Bodyguard-cradle the host, letting her enjoy herself while hiding her from the real dangers of the scary sketch comedy world.

Given how little we saw of Anna Kendrick this episode, you'd think Lorne was standing nearby off stage, ready to dive in and take a bullet.

I [...]

Watch Anna Kendrick Make Her K-Pop Debut on Funny or Die

Here's a new Funny or Die video featuring Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick traveling to South Korea to join the K-pop supergroup F(x). It'll most likely be the best video about an Oscar nominee traveling to South Korea to join a K-Pop supergroup you see all day.

Get a Job Will Forever Link Bryan Cranston, Alison Brie, & Jay Pharoah

[Whistle noise]! What a cast. Bryan Cranston, Anna Kendrick, Miles Teller, Jay Pharoah, Alison Brie, Christopher Mintz-Plasse will all appear in Get a Job, a "multi-generational comedy about four recent college graduates." Teller, whom many of us will soon come to know as that kid from Project X, is "a young man struggling in an entry-level job" whose father Bryan Cranston is also looking for a job. And turns to cooking meth to make ends meet and find a sense of danger in his empty life, I suppose? Typical Hollywood typecasting.
