Talking to Baron Vaughn About 'The Half Hour', Structuring an Act, and Recreating Behaviors

For the past 15 years, Comedy Central’s half hour specials have showcased the future stars of standup. Looking back, the early years of Comedy Central Presents included memorable sets from the likes of Mitch Hedberg, Patton Oswalt, Maria Bamford, Dane Cook and dozens more. Re-branded The Half Hour in 2012, the series continues to feature the best up-and-coming comics in the country.

For many comedians, it’s that history that makes doing a half hour special so significant. While a half hour may once have been a comic’s first major exposure, comedians now have many ways to build an audience. Almost everyone who taped a special this year does non-standup comedy [...]

Comedian Kevin Avery Presents Thugs, The Musical Not the Musical Thugs

While we're talking about race in Hollywood, here is a funny trailer from comedian Kevin Avery. The mockumentary starring Avery, Margaret Cho, and David Alan Grier examines the nature of how race is portrayed on television and also what that means to the actors who play those parts, even when they are so far removed from that culture. Also, it has the very funny American comedian Baron Vaughn playing a British actor trying his best to do an effective American accent. Seriously, seriously, Americans playing British people trying to play American people is the best. Remember in Ocean's 13 when Don Cheadle's British character pretended to be the [...]

Vaughn was recently announced to be part of the group of comedians given Comedy Central half-hour specials this year, so consider this five-minute Conan appearance to be a trailer for the upcoming Baron Vaughn Comedy Central special.

This roundtable discussion with up-and-coming comics W. Kamau Bell, Desiree Burch, Michael Che, Calise Hawkins, Phoebe Robinson, and Baron Vaughn is absolutely stuffed with thought-provoking questions and answers. The comics discuss the history of black standup, their goals onstage, and what it means to be seen as a "black comedian" rather than a comedian who happens to be black. Here's W. Kamau Bell on one of the most recent changes to the business of standup:

I think that's a part of being a comedian now, is recognizing that the world is such a smaller place than it was, even in the day of ten, fifteen years ago. I [...]
