Fox Officially Cancels 'Ben and Kate'

The Fox network pulled its critically-acclaimed but underwatched comedy Ben and Kate from the air last week, but now word has come in that the network has officially canceled the show. Fox has not said when the final two episodes will air. It's a huge bummer for fans of one of the year's best new shows, but Ben and Kate will now join the esteemed company of critically-acclaimed comedies like Arrested Development, Undeclared, and The Ben Stiller Show that Fox canceled to soon and will hopefully find a second life on DVD.

Tuesday Night Sitcom Recap: 'Happy Endings,' 'New Girl,' 'Mindy,' and More

This season, Tuesday is the busiest sitcom night of the year, with three of the four networks airing comedies all against each other on that night each week. Yesterday saw Fox's New Girl and The Mindy Project each celebrating the holidays as they prepare to take their winter breaks, while Happy Endings has its holiday episode set up to debut next week. Let's take a look at last night's new holiday-themed (and non-holiday-themed) episodes:

Happy Endings – "To Serb with Love" CLAY: In "To Serb with Love" we get to meet Alex and Jane's parents, look inside Jane's joke-writing process, and watch Max try to compete with Pete for [...]

Tuesday Night Sitcom Recap: 'Happy Endings,' 'New Girl' and More Celebrate Thanksgiving

It's Thanksgiving week in Sitcomland (and in real life too – call your loved ones), and all your favorite shows are celebrating Turkey Day this week. Let's see what happened last night on the Thanksgiving episodes of Happy Endings, New Girl, Ben and Kate, and The Mindy Project.

Happy Endings – “More Like Stanksgiving”

CLAY: "More Like Stanksgiving" takes the usual sitcom thanksgiving episode flashback and gives it a new twist. In the beginning of the show, Max reveals that he finally got the DVDs from he and Brad's season on The Real World: Sacramento, where they met. Before their Thanksgiving dinner, the group sits down to watch an episode [...]

Tuesday Night Sitcom Recap: 'Happy Endings,' 'New Girl,' and More Celebrate Halloween

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Halloween is the best holiday for sitcoms. Things can get a little mushy for Christmas, New Year's and Valentine's Day bog characters down with romantic plotlines instead of laughs, and the Fourth of July falls during the network sitcom off-season. Halloween, on the other hand, is full of costumes, mischief, and plenty of opportunities for low-stakes laughs.

This week, all the Tuesday night sitcoms celebrated All Hallow's Eve, with the Happy Endings gang pulling out all the stops for an elaborate costume, New Girl hitting a haunted house, and Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project stressed out about a [...]

Today in Mindy Kaling: Fox Buys More 'The Mindy Project' and Anne Hathaway Is Cast in Kaling’s New Movie

It's a banner day for The Office/The Mindy Project star and writer Mindy Kaling, as Fox has just picked up her new series, The Mindy Project, for a full season, along with fellow freshman sitcom Ben and Kate, and Oscar-nominated actress Anne Hathaway has been cast as the lead in The Low Self Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie, the first movie she's written. Kaling penned the Lizzie Gillespie script with fellow Office writer Brent Forrester, and she is likely to play a supporting role. Fox has picked up The Mindy Project for a full 22 episodes (the original season one order was for 13) and Ben and Kate for [...]

Fox Pulls 'Ben and Kate' from the Schedule

Fox just put its critically-acclaimed freshman sitcom Ben and Kate on hold and is ditching the idea of a Tuesday night comedy block. New Girl and The Mindy Project will continue to air at 9pm and 9:30 Tuesday, and Fox will be doubling up on Raising Hope, airing two new episodes in the 8pm hour until Hell's Kitchen takes over the timeslot on March 12, ending the network's latest stab at a two-hour live-action comedy block. It's really a shame to see Fox removing Ben and Kate, which I recently called "TV's Best New Sitcom," from the schedule because it's grown into a funny and tight show that has found [...]

Tuesday Night Sitcom Recap: 'Happy Endings,' 'New Girl,' 'Mindy,' and More

This season, Tuesday night is a sitcom traffic jam in primetime, with three of the four big networks airing comedies all against each other on the same night. Let's take a look at last night's shows, including new episodes of Happy Endings, New Girl, The Mindy Project, Ben and Kate, and Don't Trust the B—- in Apartment 23.

Happy Endings – "P&P Romance Factory"

CLAY: This week's episode, "P&P Romance Factory," seemed a little slow. Even though we got three separate storylines, none of them really stood out. The best story was probably Penny and Alex's, thanks to Casey Wilson's excellent delivery, while Max and Dave's fist bump [...]

Tuesday Night Sitcom Recap: 'Happy Endings,' 'New Girl' and More

After taking last week off for that whole election thing, your Tuesday night comedies are back, with Happy Endings, New Girl, Ben and Kate, and The Mindy Project all airing new episodes last night to ease your mind into three-and-a-half years of not caring about politics. Next week, most of the Tuesday shows will be tackling Thanksgiving, which has traditionally made for better sitcom fodder than most holidays, but this week, we get just a regular ol' bunch of episodes. That is, if you consider bar mitzvah hype guys, using your co-worker as a gynecologist, impromptu nighttime barbecues, male PMS, consensual sexual harassment, and door-to-door wine salesmen to make for [...]

Tuesday Night Comedy Recap: 'Happy Endings,' 'New Girl,' 'Ben and Kate'

Tuesdays are the most crowded night for TV sitcoms this fall, with two of the three major networks airing comedy blocks in the 9pm hour. Things kicked into high gear last night, with the return of ABC's critically-acclaimed duo, Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B—-, after several months away. Each Tuesday, the ABC shows will be facing off in the ratings against NBC's Go On and The New Normal, and Fox's New Girl and The Mindy Project (which was pre-empted last night), but hopefully, there's enough room in America's Nielsen families' hearts for all of these pretty-solid sitcoms. So, let's dive into last night's comedies with recaps of [...]

Tuesday Night Sitcom Recap: New Girl, The Mindy Project, and Ben and Kate Settle In

After a so-so ratings debut last week, Fox’s Tuesday night sitcoms are back for Week 2, which sees new series The Mindy Project and Ben and Kate offering up their first non-pilot episodes and The New Girl continuing its second season. Here’s how it all broke down:

On 'Ben and Kate,' TV's Best New Sitcom

It hasn't been a great season for new sitcoms. NBC's attempts to swing for a broader audience (Animal Practice, Guys with Kids, The New Normal) mostly missed with Go On being the only hit of the bunch, CBS's only new offering — Partners — was given the axe after six episodes, ABC debuted two poorly-reviewed modest ratings hits in Malibu Country and The Neighbors, and Fox's The Mindy Project has been subject to a bevy of casting changes and retooling. Amidst all this turmoil, Fox's other freshman comedy, Ben and Kate, has quietly found its footing and become the 2012-13 season's best new sitcom — and not just but [...]

Tuesday Night Sitcom Recap: 'New Girl,' 'Mindy,' and 'Ben and Kate'

The big networks' Tuesday night sitcom traffic jam continued last night – at least Fox and NBC's shows did. ABC's Tuesday comedies, Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B, took the night off to clear way for the Dancing with the Stars finale, but they'll be back next week. Let's take a look at what happened on last night's new Fox sitcoms, New Girl, The Mindy Project, and Ben and Kate:

New Girl – “Eggs”

SAMANTHA: This Neal Brennan-directed episode begins when Jess and Cece’s friends, Melissa and Sadie (Kay Cannon and June Diane Raphael!), reveal that they’re pregnant. Initially, the girls are thrilled – until Sadie (who’s also [...]

Ratings Down for Most Tuesday Night Comedies

Ratings are in for last night's shows, and most of the network comedies are down significantly. On Fox, New Girl scored a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demo, down 15% from 2.7 last week, and The Mindy Project earned a 1.5, down 21% from last week's 1.9. When it comes to Fox's 9pm competition on ABC, Happy Endings got a 1.4, down 22% from last week's 1.8, and Don't Trust the B received 1.2 (a series low), down 29% from 1.7 last week. Happy Endings' week ratings can be attributed to its weak lead-in, Dancing with the Stars, which hit another series low last night.

Fox's 8pm [...]

Tuesday Night TV Recap: 'The Mindy Project' and 'Ben and Kate' Celebrate Their Renewals

It’s a big week for Fox’s Tuesday night sitcom block, as newcomers Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project both just got picked up for a full first season. Ben and Kate’s first season will now be 19 episodes, whereas Mindy Project’s will be 22. Both shows seem to almost be celebrating the good news this week, with Mindy spending its third episode at a nightclub, while Ben and Kate central duo participate in a fun scavenger hunt. Elsewhere in Tuesday night sitcoms, New Girl’s second season marches on, with the latest episode revolving around the gang’s dealings with a new group of young, hip neighbors. Let’s take [...]
