Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair Are Making a New Show Together for USA

Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair, stars and creators of last season's short-lived but critically-acclaimed NBC comedy Best Friends Forever, are moving to cable for their new show. Deadline reports that USA has ordered a pilot presentation (a.k.a. short pilot) written by and starring Parham and St. Clair. The untitled project is a comedy about a single mother (Parham) calling on her career-driven best friend (St. Clair) to help her raise her kid. The Office's Zach Woods, who started his career performing improv with Parham and St. Clair at the UCB Theatre in New York, is being eyed for a supporting role. Woods recently signed on [...]

It's 'Best Friends Forever' Day!!!!

Best Friends Forever is airing two episodes tonight, which is exciting because the more of that show the better and is a bummer because they very likely will be the show's last two episodes. NBC has picked up tons of new sitcoms and has been pretty clear that it doesn't see a future for BFF on the network. But you never know!!!!! The show has developed quite a loyal fanbase, so if the ratings are decent tonight, maybe another network might save it. If you have plans tonight (how dare you!?!?), the episodes are actually online already. So bust out your scoops, homemade or store-bought, and watch the episodes [...]

Best Friends Forever Recap: "Single and Lovin' It"

Did you read the interview we posted with Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair yesterday? (If so, thanks. If not, you totes should, considering that you're reading this recap.) Well, last night's episode represented exactly what they want the show to be if it gets picked up for another season – character-rooted high jinks.

Structurally, without the burden of series basics exposition, the episode was very different than the previous three. There was, for the first time in the series, a fully formed A story and B story (as well a little C story). In addition, the main story was broken down into two pretty discreet parts, instead [...]

Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair Talk to Carson Daly about Interning at UCB and News Anchor Hair

Seriously, how great are they? Do you guys act like this with your best friends? Because I think I need new best friends. We aren't 1/6th this charming together and we never have perfect call backs that we high five, no matter what the other is saying. (Friends, if you are reading this, I'm just kidding, you're great. If you're not reading this, then screw you, be funnier and have better hair and cooler names, like Lennon. Why are you not named Lennon, "best" friends?) Maybe, Carson will be my best friend. He does do a great job interviewing Lennon and Jessica about cleaning the UCB bathrooms, having perfect [...]

Watch the Best Friends Forever Premiere Right Now

The first episode of Best Friends Forever is online, which means you can watch it right here. C'mon, it's hump day. They don't really need you to do whatever it is you do at work.

Luka Jones Joining the Cast of 'Up All Night'

Big lug Luka Jones is joining the cast of Up All Night as a series regular. He will be playing Reagan's brother who's a contractor and a recently divorced single dad. This is big news for Luka, who was last (and first) seen being great and totally killing it as Joe on Best Friends Forever. (Also, how many actors can claim to have a sweet 'stache in their headshot?) Maybe, next Lennon Parham will be cast to play Chris's younger sister and Jessica St. Clair will be cast to play Reagan's new assistant and then they'll have a spin-off entitled Best Friends Forever and Ever and it will [...]

'Best Friends Forever' to Return to Television…For a Night…At Least(?)

What are you doing on June 1st? (No, June Fools' Day isn't a thing.) Let's have a party to celebrate the airing of the fifth and sixth episodes of Best Friends Forever. I'm not saying final two episodes of Best Friends Forever because I'm holding out hope. We have four weeks to find our respective nearby Nielsen household, befriend its residents, and convince them to watch NBC from 8-9pm on that Friday. Since the show was taken off the air last week, a groundswell swelled, a petition started accumulating signatures, and people started signing up for iTunes season passes in significant numbers. It's not in a [...]

Talking with Jessica St. Clair & Lennon Parham About Best Friends Forever

Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham, creators/writers/stars of NBC's Best Friends Forever, and I are not friends, let alone best friends, but when I watch the show, like many of its fans, I feel like I am. You want to root for them because they'd root for you. It's what makes them great comic actresses – they'd be just as happy, if not happier, with their scene partners getting the laugh as they would themselves. It's how they were taught at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.

Their show is a reflection of that training; it's heavily improvised, absurd yet realistically grounded, not afraid to go into scary territories, and, [...]

Best Friends Forever Recap: "It's Raining Friends"

Hello Friends. “Friends” is the most logical nickname for fans of Best Friends Forever – you know, like Glee’s Gleeks or Modern Family’s Modernists or Parks & Rec’s Park Wreckers – other options are Biffs, Foreverers, or Jammers. Speaking of fans, I’m still a big fan of BFF, for no reason more than its unique comedic voice. The script is written around Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair’s tape-recorded improvisations, which gives the show a more natural feel than most sitcoms, old or new. This does leave the show with less clear-cut punchlines, which definitely takes time to get used to, but more genuinely funny moments.

NBC's Best Friends Forever Looks Worth Looking Forward To

Speaking of UCB, here's a preview of an upcoming NBC show created by two UCB performers (Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair), whose writing staff includes former UCB NY artistic director Anthony King, and which originally starred UCB's Adam Pally (though it lost him to Happy Endings). The improvisational force is strong in Best Friends Forever, and judging by this preview, so is the comedy and the heart. The show premieres April 4.

Is 'New Girl' the First "Post-Post-9/11 Show?"

In an interview with Written ByNew Girl executive producer Brett Baer explain his theory:

When we tested the show, after we put the pilot together, it was strange how people were responding. We were all surprised by how connected people felt to it during the focus group testing. I was thinking long and hard about it, and I said to Dave [Finkel, another New Girl producer], "What we've done here is create maybe the first post-post-9/11 show." The comedy in the past 10 years prior to our show had an edge to it. It was satirical. There was a cynicism about the comedy. What our show came along at the [...]

'Best Friends Forever' Taken Off the Air Indefinitely

Here is some sadder news to start the week. On Friday evening, Lennon Parham tweeted, "BFF Fans: Wanted to let you know that our show is being taken off the air until the summer. Hoping to post ep 5 & 6 online asap. We love u." To which, Jessica St. Clair added, "BFF fans: @lennonparham and I are so in love with each and every one of u – your support of the show means so much to us. #IamaBFFbeliever."

It's not a wholly surprising move on NBC's part, as the show was pretty consistently pulling in about a 0.8 18-49 rating, but it's still a bummer. BFF was [...]

Best Friends Forever Recap: "Put a Pin in it"

This episode was built around a pretty stock sitcom premise, which is a great thing. The show has been moving forward at a pretty fast pace, it's nice to see it settle into itself a bit. And where it settled is a very Laverne & Shirley, very I Love Lucy, modern shenaniganfest. They know the dialogue and the chemistry is what makes the show special so as to not be too nuts, the rest is pretty classic.

There cold opens are perfect examples of this as they are partly the more traditional, plot-explaining type and partly the more contemporary, big crazy scene type. Last night that meant Jess interrupting [...]

Best Friends Forever Recap: "Pilot"

Not many shows get the straight out the gate (or str8 out the g8) recap treatment so why am I writing this and why are you reading this? Sure, having three-for-three UCB leads (see: poet — know it) helps but we’re here mostly because the Best Friends Forever pilot was like weirdly awesome. I say weirdly because comedy pilots tend to stink like monster chili and I say awesome because it was awesome, I was in awe, I possessed some — if not a lot of — awe.

Admittedly, the show has a mundane premise — best friend moves in with other best friend and her boyfriend — but [...]
