Jesus, You're Funny: 'Black Jesus' and the Long History of Comedic Messiahs

Wherever Aaron McGruder goes, controversy follows. Black Jesus, McGruder's new live-action Adult Swim show starring Gerald "Slink" Johnson as the title character, debuts tonight amid criticisms from Christians of what they view to be blasphemous material, based not on screenings of full episodes but on footage from an extended trailer Adult Swim posted on July 18.

McGruder's last show, the just-recently-ended Boondocks, offended practically everybody. Conservatives objected to The Boondocks' raunchy material, progressives found the show to be misogynist and homophobic, a few of the show's satirical targets didn't take kindly to being satirized and threatened to sue either McGruder or Adult Swim, and Boondocks viewers were offended [...]

The Catholic League Is Cautiously Hopeful About 'Black Jesus'

"If the goal is to lure young people to take a closer look at Jesus, the Son of God, that is noble… But if so, it is not a good sociological sign: Must we debase Jesus to make him real? It will be interesting to see how the show develops, and how the audience reacts to the Jesus message, however twisted his delivery."

- President of the Catholic League Bill Donahue addresses Adult Swim's new show Black Jesus in an official statement calling the show's depiction of Jesus a "mixed bag" who has "many redeeming qualities."

Aaron McGruder, creator of the comic strip-turned-Peabody Award-winning Adult Swim series The Boondocks, has signed a new first-look deal with Adult Swim to create and develop new shows for the cable network. His first project under the deal is a live-action adventure pilot he's writing called Hooligan Squad that is set in the future in Japanese-occupied San Francisco, following an American insurgency. The Boondocks ended its four-season run on Adult Swim earlier this summer, with McGruder having left the show after its third season.
