A Reunion and a New Sketch from 'Late Night with Conan's Writers

Well, the Paley Center has been temporarily closed due to repairs (it's reopened now) so instead of dipping into the archives, today we head over to the gross Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn to Littlefield, home of Scott Rogowsky's weekly live talk show "Running Late." On April 30th, 2014, his show hosted three former writers from Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Andy Blitz, Jon Glaser, and Brian McCann, to reminisce, watch some clips, and perform a new, original sketch for the audience gathered there that evening. Luckily, the cameras were rolling and these videos can be enjoyed by everyone, including the people who didn't walk past the world's most disgusting canal [...]

You Had To Be There #88: Eric Hutchinson

This week, Sara and Nikki rehash their Thanksgivings and gush about their new staff at MTV, especially the inspired hiring of Brian McCann as head writer. The ladies discuss celebrity deaths and how to live forever through the magic of sampling before greeting musician Eric Hutchinson on a lighter note. Their chat swerves from sitcoms like Liz & Dick to singalongs like the R.E.M. catalog, from a shout-out to a sweet sleep app to advice on surviving stalkers. Eventually Eric rolls far enough away from the boardroom table to play his misleading hit “Watching You Watch Him” and a cover of a Police classic. Kick [...]

Conan's Brian McCann Joins FX's 'Totally Biased' as a Writer/Producer

Longtime Conan writer/performer Brian McCann has been hired as a writer/producer on FX's Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, FX announce today. McCann joked in a statement, "I couldn't be more excited to round out the diverse and talented staff at Totally Biased by supplying the rare 'Irish White guy' voice so often ignored in late night." He's coming to Totally Biased just ahead of the show's expansion to five nights a week this fall when it moves to FX's new all-comedy channel FXX. McCann worked for Conan O'Brien for 17 years before departing last fall to become the head writer for the first season of MTV's Nikki [...]

Conan's Brian McCann Named Head Writer on 'The Nikki and Sara Show'

Longtime Conan writer Brian McCann has just been hired as the head writer for the upcoming late night series The Nikki and Sara Show, comedian Sara Schaefer tells us. Hosted by Schaefer and Nikki Glaser from the popular podcast You Had to Be There, The Nikki and Sara Show is set to debut next year on MTV. Emmy winner McCann spent 17 years writing for Conan, from 1995 until this past August. At Conan, McCann helped to define the show's sensibility and played some of its more memorable characters, like Preparation H Raymond, the FedEx Pope, and Mick Ferguson, The Guy Who's Awfully Proud of His Bulletproof [...]

You Had To Be There #89: Brian McCann

This week, Sara and Nikki implicate the friends, family, and bullies to blame for all their neuroses and therapy, but the brilliant Brian McCann (Conan) soothes their stress through the Hawaiian healing of hoʻoponopono. You may recall from last week's ep that Nikki and Sara landed Brian as the head writer for their little late-night show over at MTV. As a guest, Brian largely avoids shop talk and instead leads a hilarious discussion on protecting one's castle from every imaginable threat, including intruders, hellhounds, and make-believe fires. After exploring the board games that drive families apart, Nikki and Sara salvage what starts as a train-wreck of a [...]
