Brooks Wheelan Talks About His Hiring and Firing from 'SNL'

"I feel like I was hired because they hired so many new cast members, and I feel like I was let go because they hired too many new cast members. So I can't really fault them. That's part of the reason I was there and that's part of the reason I was let go. … They do their own stuff and they clearly know what works."

- Standup Brooks Wheelan discusses his recent firing from SNL in a new interview with The Wrap, in which he says he's looking forward to living a more "Forrest Gump life."

Noël Wells and John Milhiser Also Leaving 'SNL'

Yesterday, new SNL featured player Brooks Wheelan announced he'd been fired, but that's not the only change to the long-running sketch show's cast this season. Deadline reports that fellow new featured players Noël Wells and John Milhiser will not be returning in the fall as SNL bosses have opted not to renew their contracts. Deadline adds that discussions are underway about Mike O'Brien's future on the show. O'Brien, who was an SNL writer for four seasons before being bumped up to featured player status this past season, could either wind up remaining in the cast or be bumped back to the writing staff.

The Deadline report also confirms that Nasim Pedrad, who is a [...]

Watch Brooks Wheelan's Journey from Comedian to 'SNL' Cast Member

For anyone interested in SNL or making it out there in the big scary comedy world, this video by SNL featured player Brooks Wheelan is the best video you'll see today. Wheelan decided to copycat off of the whole one-clip-per-day compilation video cliché, but little did he know back in January 2013 that he'd slowly be recording his own journey from pavement-pounding comedian to member of the legendary SNL cast. It's a great video with a ton of SNL cameos, and if this doesn't warm your heart on this cold winter day then you're beyond the point of salvation.

The Vine 5 Film Festival: Eggs Over My Dad Abandoning Me

Vine is a toy from Twitter that challenges users to make the most profound work ever committed to video in exactly six seconds. Or at the very least, challenges comedians to bring a little more laughter into this world. Every Tuesday we showcase five of the funniest short shorts of the past week.

Your RSS feed might be difficult and not show the videos, but trust us – they are there.

More funny people made their first attempts at Vine this past week. As part of #OneVineDay and the Just For Laughs festival in Chicago, some comedians who were either waiting for the app to get to Android and/or [...]

Brooks Wheelan Is Going on the "Brooks Wheelan Falls Back on Stand Up Comedy (sorta) Tour"

Since news broke last week that SNL had fired three featured players, none of them have responded and bounced back from the bad news quite like standup Brooks Wheelan. In addition to his string of hilarious tweets following the big announcement ("Whats the protocol on length of departure from SNL and your 'Best Of' DVD coming out. So stoked to see mine. Bet it's super long…"), Wheelan is making the best out of an unfortunate situation by going back to his standup roots in the form of an international tour, as announced via his Tumblr. Wheelan will make stops in New York, Canada, Europe, Seattle, [...]

Brooks Wheelan Announces He's Been Fired from 'SNL'

The SNL changes promised by Lorne Michaels last month are beginning to trickle in with last night's news that featured player Brooks Wheelan has been fired from the show. Wheelan tweeted the news himself: "Had a blast and loved every second of it. I'm totally honored to be able to make this next joke… FIRED FROM NEW YORK IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT!"

Wheelan joined SNL as a writer last August and was hired as a featured player in September. While he delivered a few impersonations and made a couple memorable appearances on Weekend Update, the Los Angeles-based standup never found his footing in the sketch format [...]

'SNL' Review: Tina Fey Introduces The New Cast

For a show that evolves constantly, SNL does a remarkable job preserving its brand. Despite the changes in the cast, the writers, and the culture it parodies, SNL will always be that live, hip, New York-centered show that puts up a few sketches at the end of the week to try to make you laugh. There's the "Live from New York…" throw line, the theme music, Don Pardo listing off the cast, the host walking out on stage, followed by that predictable pattern of live sketches, videos, musical performances, and the news segment. Critics put down this structure in favor of looser, more inventive sketch show formats, but given SNL's [...]

Brooks Wheelan Is the Final New 'SNL' Cast Member

Los Angeles standup Brooks Wheelan is joining Saturday Night Live as a cast member this season, Lorne Michaels told The New York Times yesterday. Wheelan was announced as a writer for the show last month, but was ultimately chosen as the final new cast member. Today, NBC is expected to officially announce the other new cast members are Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Noël Wells, and Michael Patrick O'Brien, while last year's featured player Tim Robinson will move to the writing staff.

Wheelan was a contributing writer at CollegeHumor, and last year, he was named one of Comedy Central's 10 Comics to Watch. Even more prestigiously, he was on [...]

'SNL' Firing New Cast Members Displays a Show Still Deeply In Transition

Word has come down this week that SNL cast members Noël Wells, John Milhiser, and Brooks Wheelan have been let go from the show after one season, with Nasim Pedrad also leaving to work as a regular on Mulaney (a move that has long been anticipated) and Mike O'Brien's status currently in talks. Their departures don't come as too huge a shock — as we recapped at the end of last season, the three saw little screen time and had few memorable moments during the season. And while it must come as a disappointment to those actors and their fans, let's not forget that at least a third of everyone [...]

Breaking Down Each Cast Member's Contribution to 'SNL' Season 39

With SNL's 39th season coming to a close, we're taking a look at the past season with a series of posts examining the highs, lows, and other memorable moments from the past eight months. Here, we look at the performers that make up SNL's current cast, including their overall contributions to the show, memorable roles, relative screen time, and prospects for returning next season.

SNL's 39th season was a crowded one. Record-breaking crowded, even. Six new hires, plus a seventh midseason, rose the total to 17, making the current cast the largest SNL has seen during its entire four-decade run, topping even the infamously bloated 1990-1991 season. That season only had [...]

What to Look Forward to in 'SNL' Season 39

Season 39 of SNL kicks off this Saturday night with Tina Fey, Arcade Fire, and a mouthful of new names for Don Pardo to read off in the opening credits. After several seasons of little turnover, the cast is experiencing a major upheaval, with six — six! — new cast members to replace the departed Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, and Fred Armisen. This is the largest staff hire in 18 years, tying the 1995-1996 season's addition of Jim Breuer, Will Ferrell, Darrell Hammond, David Koechner, Cheri Oteri, and Nancy Walls. After the show's dismal 1994-1995 season, which saw near cancellation and the firing/resignation of 12 cast members, those six were [...]

Standup Brooks Wheelan Hired to Write for 'SNL'

SNL is continuing to amass new people for its upcoming season. LA-based standup Brooks Wheelan has been hired as a writer for the sketch show for the show's 39th season, which begins next month. Wheelan is a contributing writer at CollegeHumor, and last year, he was named one of Comedy Central's 10 Comics to Watch. Wheelan is the third addition to SNL's writing staff this season, following Mikey Day and Claire Mulaney. The three writers are just some of the new blood at SNL for the 2013-14 season, with Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Michael Patrick O'Brien, and Noël Wells set to join the [...]
