The Episodes of 'SNL' Season 39, Ranked

With SNL's 39th season coming to a close, we're taking a look at the past season with a series of posts examining the highs, lows, and other memorable moments from the past eight months. Here, we look at each episode as a whole, ranking them in order of overall success and positive resonance with viewers.

Obviously comedy is subjective, and everyone watches SNL looking for different things — this list is just one of many you can find online. As far as we're concerned, things like musical guests, surprise cameos, and drama surrounding the show are less important than the plain-and-simple comedy aspects of an episode: How many sketches had [...]

Tina Fey to Host the 'SNL' Season Premiere; Miley Cyrus, Bruce Willis to Follow

Tina Fey is coming back to Saturday Night Live to host the season premiere, TV Guide Magazine reports. The musical guest for the September 28th first episode of the season will be Arcade Fire. Miley Cyrus will serve as host and musical guest for the October 5th episode, and Bruce Willis is set to host the October 12th episode with musical guest Katy Perry.

The season premiere will mark Tina Fey's third time hosting the show; she previously hosted in 2008 and 2010. It's the second time hosting for both Miley Cyrus and Bruce Willis. Cyrus previously hosted in 2011, while Willis hasn't hosted since 1989, before Miley [...]

Walking Through the History of 'Between Two Ferns' with Scott Aukerman

With the Between Two Ferns: A Fairytale of New York debuting Sunday at 8:30 before the Comedy Awards, I thought it was a perfect time to look back at the Between Two Ferns series. B2F has been incredibly popular, bringing in over 80 million views across the entire series, on Funny or Die alone. Beyond that, whenever a new one is released, it nearly instantly reaches Internet omnipresence.

It's hard to say why exactly the series has had such enduring popularity, as it has maintained relevance for over four years now (which is nearly four zillion years in Internet time or 28 years in dog time). Of course, it's wildly funny and unique [...]

'SNL' Review: Badass Bruce Willis

For people who like to talk about comedy, there are few greater debates than the one over the claim that "funny is funny." Can a performer or joke be objectively funny independent of context or medium? There are those who argue yes, that some comedians are so talented that their popularity is universal — Robin Williams, say, or Bill Murray — and that every culture since the dawn of man has had some version of a fart joke. Then there are those who argue no, that there are "different kinds of funny." Comedian Bill Burr made waves for his rant about "alternative comedy," which he criticized as being [...]

Bill Murray Discusses Del Close; Is The Best

Bill Murray has always kept the media and Hollywood at a distance. Besides, regularly losing roles because he doesn’t return phone calls, he also isn't the most talkative interview. In the recent Esquire, writer Scott Raab found a trick to get him to talk: ask him about Del Close. Murray studied with Del back in Chicago and the man obviously had a huge impact on him. Murray explained:

He was incredibly gracious to your talent and always tried to further it. He got people to perform beyond their expectations. He really believed that anyone could do it if they were present and showed respect. There was a whole [...]

Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis Welcomes Bruce Willis

Today is a good day, as it's a day with a new episode of one of my favorite things in the world, Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis. Today's guest: Bruce Willis.

Cecily Strong Pitched Some Great 'Die Hard' Ideas To Bruce Willis In His 'SNL' Promos

Bruce Willis is hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend, and Cecily Strong got to co-star in her first promos with the action star. Presumably she lobbied hard for the gig, because she has got some great ideas for future Die Hard films and the leading lady that should play opposite him.

Let Kristen Schaal's Floating Head Explain Women Voters

Last night, Kristen Schaal slapped on a green-on-green, green-screen-ready jumpsuit to walk through the last 16 years of "_____ Moms." Mostly, it was an excuse for Schaal to play her best floating head and Stewart to laugh profusely at such. I'd vote for Schaal and her campaign partner, Bruce Willis's tank top from the 5th Element, any day, just for the access to legal …math.
