'Extraordinary Person' Visas and the Plight of Canadian Comedians

At some point, every comic serious about their career makes the move to either New York or Los Angeles. Some are lucky enough to grow up in one of the two cities, but the majority of comics migrate there. Their stories are generally pretty similar: drive across the country, rent a brutal apartment in a terrible neighborhood, and start from scratch. It’s an enormous sacrifice, but it’s part of the process. For Canadian comics, however, the situation is more complicated. When your friends from the great white north decide that this is how they want to earn their living, they can’t just saunter across the border into New York to [...]

Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, and Chris Elliott to Star in CBC Comedy Series 'Schitt's Creek'

What's better news here — Variety's report that Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Chris Elliott, and Levy's son Dan are set to star in a half-hour Canadian comedy, or that the show is called Schitt's Creek? According to the report, the show — which was co-created by the two Levys — focuses on "video store billionaire Johnny Rose (Levy), his soap star wife Moira (O’Hara) and their kids, who suddenly find themselves broke. They are forced to leave their pampered lives to regroup and rebuild their empire from within the rural city limits of their only remaining asset — Schitt’s Creek, an arm pit of a town they once [...]

The Beginner's Guide to the Canadian Mockumentary Series 'Trailer Park Boys'

Last month, Netflix announced that the Canadian comedy series Trailer Park Boys is returning for an eighth and ninth season on the streaming network after a seven-year hiatus. Whether you're unfamiliar with the series or a diehard TPB fan, here's a brief guide to Mike Clattenburg's misfit Canadian world of the ex-cons, weed-growers, and kitty lovers of Sunnyvale.

For the [...]

What's Every Former 'Kids in the Hall' Writer Up To Now?

“I got that one from the kids in the hall.”–Sid Caesar, blaming his writers whenever a joke would bomb

It's taken me many years to wrap my head around the concept of television writers. It seems like I've always more or less operated under the assumption that people on TV just wandered in front of the cameras and were cool/funny, and then they went and cashed their massive paychecks. This felt doubly true for sketch comedy shows, going back to Monty Python's Flying Circus, where each of the six members of the troupe were credited as creators, writers, and performers. Since I accepted early on that Python had made [...]

Seasons 8 and 9 of 'Trailer Park Boys' Are Coming to Netflix This Fall

Fans of Canadians, kitties, rum and coke, weed, Rickyisms, and all things Trailer Park Boys can finally rejoice after the seven-year wait since the last season ended in 2007. According to a Netflix press release out today, the streaming network has acquired the Canadian comedy's new 10-episode season to air sometime later this year, with a ninth season renewal already locked in and in the writing stage. In addition to the two new seasons, Netflix has also added the latest Trailer Park Boys seasons — which originally aired on Canada's Showcase network — to its instant streaming service. Here a quick teaser at what you can [...]
