How a Debut Film Director Got Bill Murray to Star in His Movie

The Wall Street Journal has a great piece out this week on how director Ted Melfi got Bill Murray to star in his debut feature film St. Vincent, and it's just as strange and amazing as you might expect a Murray casting story to be. After getting access to Murray's famous 1-800 number and leaving messages for months, Melfi says he finally got a response from Murray's lawyer with a request from Murray for a one-page letter regarding the project. A few weeks later, Melfi was driving and got a call from Murray himself:

"Listen," Mr. Murray said. "I read your script, and I think it's great—and who [...]

Adam Scott, Alan Tudyk, and Matt Besser All Auditioned for 'The Office'

Rainn Wilson posted this sign-in sheet for auditions for The Office on Facebook today featuring a bunch of people who tried out for the roles of Michael, Dwight, Jim, and Pam. These are the first 14 actors to audition for the show in the fall of 2003, including UCB founder Matt Besser for Dwight, Melissa McCarthy's husband and writing partner Ben Falcone for Michael, and Mr. Show and 24 star Mary Lynn Rajskub for Pam. Rainn Wilson and Jenna Fischer are the only ones on here who booked the job, but plenty of talented people still populate this list. It's hard to imagine anyone else in these [...]

It Seems at Least One Love Triangle Is Returning to 'Arrested Development'

You know, the one that features two Lucilles? TV Guide is reporting that Liza Minnelli recently arrived in Los Angeles to shoot Arrested Development. This is very exciting news for Buster and maybe Gob. This comes after the news that Judy Greer and both Henry Winkler and Scott Baio are coming back. It's pretty safe to say that most if not all of the major guest stars will be returning for the fourth season. Steve Holt! Carl Weathers!

Thomas Middleditch to Play Dwight's Younger Bro

Thomas Middleditch, who recently can be seen doing a Southern accent in The Campaign has a very extensive improv background, performing at IO, Second City, and UCB, and was named one of Variety's "10 Comics to Watch" in 2011. Late last night, Middleditch was officially cast to play Jeb Schrute, Dwight's laidback younger brother, on The Office spinoff, The Farm. He's joining Majandra Delfino who was cast earlier this week as sister Fannie Schrute. Jeb has had many zany careers: worm farmer, Bigfoot hunter, successfully running a Northern California pot farm, and he once made a workout video of things you can do with a knife and [...]

John Goodman in Talks to Play 'Hangover III's' Villian

The lovely, awesome John Goodman is being eyed to play the bad guy in the final Hangover movie. (More like John not so Goodman. Get it? Because he won't be G– I'll just stop now.) Goodman is a natural bad guy, as was the case in this past season of Community, because of how physically imposing he is and the undeniable gravitas of his voice. If Goodman can't do it, Sean Penn and Robert Downey Jr. are director Todd Phillips' back-up choices. And this marks the first time where John Goodman, Sean Penn, and Robert Downey Jr. were fighting for the same role. Well, other than when they all [...]

Miles Teller Cast as Dan Aykroyd in Upcoming Belushi Biopic

Over the weekend, Emile Hirsch — who has been cast to play SNL star John Belushi in an upcoming biopic by Steve Conrad — announced that Miles Teller (The Spectacular Now, Project X) has been cast to play the part of Dan Aykroyd. "A shout out to Miles Teller!" Hirsch told the audience, which included Teller, at an event according to THR. "We're going to be working together soon. He's playing Dan Aykroyd in the Belushi movie." The casting will not be formally confirmed until after Teller wraps up press obligations for his current Sundance movie Whiplash and upcoming film That Awkward Moment, but does he have [...]

Larry David Casts Every Actor for His Movie – There Are No More Actors

You want to hang out with Larry David, right? So it should come as no surprise that a lot of people have signed on for Clear History, his semi-improvised HBO movie about a man named Nathan Flomm (David) who changes his identity to Rolly DaVore and moves to a small island off the coast of Massachusetts, after giving up 10% of an electric car company that eventually is worth billions. So who's signed on? Let's run them down:

Jon Hamm plays Will Haney, Flomm's handsome rival and boss at the car company.

Kate Hudson plays Rhonda, Haney's wife who has a special friendship with Flomm.

Michael Keaton plays [...]

Leslie Knope Has a VERY Exciting New Nemesis

Jon Glaser has joined the cast of Parks and Recreation! He'll play a councilman and local orthodontist who, as Mike Schur tells TVLine: " “basically becomes Leslie’s nemesis. He doesn’t find her interesting or charming at all, and doesn’t care about her bright-eyed, bushy-tailed attitude toward making the town better… He just doesn’t like her.” Doesn't like her!?? Impossible. Well… It's great because it's about time that Leslie met someone who just doesn't buy into her whole thing (so she can vanquish him). It's also great because Jon Glaser is the best.

'Portlandia', 'Community' and More Guest Star Business

- Chloe Sevigny is going stop by Portlandia to play Fred and Carrie's new roommate Alexandra. If you made a list of perfect Portlandia guest stars, Chlo-Sev had to be in the top seven, if not the top four.

- Little Britain's Matt Lucas (aka the bald fellow in Bridesmaids) will be coming to Community to play Toby, a nerdish fellow who Abed meets at an Inspector Spacetime convention. The fast friends become faster friends when they learn they had previously "met" online. Sounds like a nice enough character, which makes me believe he will ultimately turn into a villain. A British villain. I smell a [...]

Chris Pratt to Play a Lawyer?

Human golden retriever Chris Pratt is in talks to star opposite Vince Vaughn in the remake of the French-Canadian comedy Starbuck. Starbuck is about Vaughn's character learning he's fathered 533 children via sperm donation. Pratt would play Vaughn's lawyer and the father of a whole mess of kids too. Andy as a lawyer!? Crazy. Before this, Pratt is supposed to play one of the marines who killed Osama Bin Laden; though, that sounds more like a job for Bert Macklin.

Bob Odenkirk and Patton Oswalt Join the Cast of 'The Kitchen Sink'

Bob Odenkirk, Patton Oswalt, and Ian Roberts have joined the cast of The Kitchen Sink, a new horror-sci-fi-comedy, Deadline reports. The movie is being directed by Robbie Pickering (Natural Selection), written by Oren Uziel (the upcoming 22 Jump Street and Downtown Owl), and produced by Jonah Hill. Here's how the plot is described:

The action takes place in Dilford, a place where vampires were at the top of the social order, zombies were at the bottom, and the humans were in the middle. This all goes awry and it’s a battle, and it’s up to three reps of those groups to restore harmony.

Odenkirk, Oswalt, and Roberts are joining [...]

A Third Chicagoan Added to 'SNL' Cast: Cecily Strong

Cecily Strong will join the cast of SNL this season and instantly become the cast member with the coolest name. Cecily, like Aidy Bryant and Tim Robinson – whose casting leaked Friday and confirmed today, is a veteran of the Chicago comedy scene, boasting training at iO, Annoyance Theatre, and Second City. These castings are undeniably big for the Chicago comedy community, which maybe gets overshadowed by New York and Los Angeles. Cecily will make her debut this Saturday night. Watch a few videos of her after the jump.

Dwight's Family Continues to Grow

Tom Bower has been cast to play the Schrute's great uncle Heinrich on The Farm. He is described as charming and manipulative and possibly a former Nazi. Not like a metaphoric Nazi, like how a child might describe a particularly mean lunch-lady, but like an actual Nazi. This is somewhat typecasting for old Tom Bower as he was previously seen playing Pop Pop, the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia gang's Nazi grandfather.

Matt Jones, who's best known for playing Badger on Breaking Bad, has also joined the cast. He'll play Dwight's cousin Zeke. The word is that originally Zeke was supposed to be a minor recurring character but [...]

How Melissa Leo Met Louis

"What happened was, I was at the Emmys with my son, and he said, 'Oh, there’s Louis C.K. I want to meet him!' I don’t think my boy’s ever said that. He’s 25 years old and has been around all sorts of people! So I went over and introduced myself to Louis C.K., and then I got more aware of who he was and what he had done. He offered me this role, and I asked to see some of his shows. So, yeah, I got what he was doing, and if he thought I could be her and do that with him — yeah, I’m willing to give it [...]
