Kevin Smith has been working on a possible Clerks III since 2012, when he said he planned on it to be his final movie as a director. While a few updates have trickled in since then, yesterday Variety reported that The Weinstein Company — who owns the rights to the Clerks franchise — had passed on the sequel's $6M price tag. "[The Weinsteins] passed," Smith said. "I went in with a $6 million budget and they were like, 'Oh no, Kevin. This is too high.' Bob offered us distribution, but they weren’t going to finance it."

Kevin Smith Started Writing 'Clerks III,' Already Calling It "The Best Film I'll Ever Make"

"20 years ago today, we started shooting CLERKS. 20 years later, with no plan or provocation, I jumped out of bed at 4:20 this morning and started writing CLERKS III. It's been like hanging out with old friends. And after 2 hours of tapping the keys and giggling, I have come to a conclusion… CLERKS III will be the best film I'll ever make."

Kevin Smith Is Planning for His Last Movie to Be 'Clerks III'

Writer/director Kevin Smith announced that he'd be retiring last year after he made one last movie. That movie was supposed to be the hockey drama Hit Somebody, but Smith decided to make that two movies before scrapping that idea and announcing today via Twitter that he's turning it into a six-part miniseries. Smith also said on Twitter that, with the Hit Somebody shift, he now has a different movie in mind for his writing/directing swan song: Clerks III.
