Master of Ceremonies: Ardie Fuqua's Rough Road Through Comedy

Ardie Fuqua is worried that he's been too funny. “I didn’t get too many laughs, did I?” he asks, sliding into a seat next to me in the back row.

He has just finished a 25-minute set at Caroline’s on Broadway, the argyle-patterned comedy club steps from Times Square, where he is opening Tracy Morgan’s lineup of Thanksgiving Weekend shows. The sound of applause is still ringing throughout the 300-seat club, and Ardie is visibly out of breath, his forehead drenched in sweat from the heat of the spotlights.

It’s easy to understand why overshadowing Tracy would not be on Ardie’s to do list. This is one of their [...]

Stroll Along the Comedy Cellar's Back Wall

New York Times' Jason Zinoman writes beautifully about the wall of signed photos at the back of New York's famed Comedy Cellar. Some comedians signed earnestly. Anthony Jeselnik wrote, “Thank you for being my family.” While others used their signature as a chance to make more jokes. Louis C.K wrote.: “I’m going to hate looking at this picture all the time. Please take it down when I die.” Sarah Silverman did her thing: “Dear Comedy Cellar: I’m pregnant. It’s yours. Love Sarah.”

Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock Performed Together Again Last Night – With Kevin Hart and Others This Time

Yesterday, we reported that Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock had done stand-up together live on stage at New York's famous Comedy Cellar late the previous night. It turns out the duo went onstage together again last night too. Hannibal Buress started off the evening, followed by Chappelle, then by Kevin Hart. After that, Chappelle, Rock, Hart, Marlon Wayans, and Bill Bellamy took to the stage together for some joking around and riffing. Here's ?uestlove, who was also present, describing the event on his Instagram:

I once sat in on drums with Prince on bass, Sheila E on percussion, Frank Mcomb on keys, Rachelle Ferrell on vocals [...]

"Comedy Is Hard To Quit": A Love Letter To The Comedy Cellar

In "Comedy Is Hard to Quit: 9 Months at the Comedy Cellar, New York's Most Diehard Club," writer Jessica Pilot spends her nights watching shows at the famed Village club, gets in good with stand-ups like Colin Quinn and Jim Norton, and otherwise attempts to use comedy to claw her way out of a black depression. Along the way Pilot ruminates on the contrast between the hilarious legacy of the club, and the abject despair that caused her, as well as a host of other comics, to reach out and use stand-up to pull themselves out.  “Great art comes from great suffering. I know it sounds fucking [...]

Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock Performed Together Last Night; Is a Tour in the Works?

Rumors of a Chris Rock/Dave Chappelle stand-up tour have been circulating for over a year now, but it's looking like more and more of a possibility after the two comedians performed together last night in New York and discussed the possibility onstage. The Comic's Comic has an in-depth report about the duo's unannounced dual stand-up performance at The Comedy Cellar after midnight last night. Chappelle took the stage for 40 minutes of solo stand-up (unannounced) before Rock hopped up. The two riffed together into the wee hours of the morning, and even ended up calling Arsenio Hall and Lenny Kravitz and texting Jay-Z to go [...]
