Inside Festival Supreme, Tenacious D's Comedy Mega-Event

If Tenacious D’s Festival Supreme was any indication, the days of the comedy tent playing second fiddle at music festivals might soon be over.

Festival Supreme was pretty fucking awesome.

More than 9,000 comedy fans took over the famous Santa Monica Pier Saturday for the first ever Festival Supreme Music and Comedy Festival, which was curated by Tenacious D’s Jack Black and Kyle Gass. The stated lineup was already a who’s who of comedy giants – Adam Sandler, Zach Galifianakis, Sarah Silverman, Fred Armisen, etc. – but it was the surprise guests – Conan O’Brien, the Lonely Island, and Billy Idol, among others – that put the [...]

In addition to that, there are delightfully titled shows like "Comics We Hope Don't Move to LA (Though We Understand There Is Much More Work There)" and "Comics Marc Maron Will Probably Resent in [...]

UK's V Festival Comes Under Fire for Its All-Male Lineup

V Festival, the UK's Virgin Media-sponsored music festival, is being criticized this week for its all-male comedy lineup. The Independent reports that the festival's comedy stage will feature 26 comedians, all male. After a ton of complaints, the festival responded by saying they tried to book female comedians but that "no one was available." Last year, the event featured four female comedians; the number was zero once again in 2012. This is just one of many stories about sexism in comedy to come out of the UK so far this year, following standup Jenny Collier being bumped from a UK show because "they don't want too many [...]

Moontower Fest Disinvites Matt Braunger for Performing at Competing SXSW

There's a rivalry brewing in Austin, Texas, between two spring comedy fests: The Moontower Comedy and Oddity Festival and South by Southwest's (SXSW) comedy festival. Well, it's a bit of a one-sided rivalry, as second-year festival Moontower prohibits comedians who perform there from performing at SXSW Comedy, which is currently in its sixth year, while SXSW is perfectly okay with comedians from Moontower doing shows there. Stand-up Matt Braunger (Up All Night, MADtv) has been caught between the two competing festivals, as Moontower has made an example of him by disinviting him after he agreed to perform at both festivals.

"He truly doesn't deserve it," SXSW comedy fest [...]
