Diving Into the Cult of Dan Harmon in 'Harmontown'

When introducing the documentary Harmontown at the South by Southwest Film Festival, director Neil Berkeley (Beauty is Embarrassing) described his film's thesis, saying, “The point of this film is not about whether Dan Harmon is a good person or a bad person, but to understand why people are in that room listening to him.” The film follows Harmon on tour with his Harmontown podcast shortly after the embattled show runner's firing from Community in early 2013. Berkeley's remarks make clear it's less a tour doc than a character study, in a similar vein to Rodman Flender's doc, Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, which premiered in 2011 also at SXSW. And [...]

Vince Gilligan Discusses His Upcoming 'Community' Appearance

"Everybody in their heart of hearts wishes they could be Errol Flynn or Harrison Ford, swashbuckling away in a big movie. I always knew I couldn’t act and I couldn’t sing, so I never really tried either. But out of the blue, Dan Harmon called up and said, would you like to do a guest shot on Community? And it was irresistible. I couldn’t say no."

- Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan to The NY Times about his on-camera role in this Thursday's episode of Community, which will be his acting debut.

Watch Paul F. Tompkins and Gillian Jacobs Have a Chat

Here's the latest episode of Paul F. Tompkins's web chat show Speakeasy, and his guest this time around is Community's Gillian Jacobs. As always with Speakeasy, it's a lively and engaging conversation that doesn't feel stale and pre-planned like a lot of TV interviews do, and Jacobs delves into some fun parts of her past, including her unusual start as a child actor, being on probation at Juilliard, and being oblivious to Community's frequent pop culture references.

Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, and Jim Rash Explore Some Online 'Community' Fan Art on '@midnight'

A mini-Community reunion happened on @midnight last night that included the above segment, where Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, and Jim Rash are tasked with identifying some real online Community fan art. Click through for four more segments from the episode, including one with a special Craigslist reading from astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Halfway Through Season 5, 'Community' Is Back to Its Old, Wonderful Self

Coming into this season of Community, there was a lot to contend with.  Dan Harmon returned to run the show, a less than satisfactory season 4 had to be addressed, the departures of Chevy Chase and Donald Glover had to be dealt with, all this added to the typical series lull that comes with a fifth season of a sitcom. With the Olympics taking over our regularly scheduled programming for the next couple weeks, we have some time to really think about how Community is doing this season.

The first six episodes of this 13-episode season have highlighted all of the show’s strengths. Quickly brushing season 4's missteps under the [...]

'Community' Takes an Anti-Graffiti Stance in This 'G.I. Joe'-Themed PSA

Community's animated G.I. Joe-themed episode airs next week on NBC, so ahead of that the show put together this helpful PSA for kids who think graffiti is cool. Britta and Abed are aptly nicknamed Buzzkill and Fourth Wall, which are exactly the kind of heroes the comedy world needs.

Dan Harmon and Mitch Hurwitz Are Working on a Mysterious Project Together

Community creator Dan Harmon did an interview with Rolling Stone out today, and in it, he mentioned that he and Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz are working on a mysterious new project together.

Here's what Harmon said, although he deliberately didn't give a lot of details:

I've begged him to come to the writers' room on Community, but he has wisely declined. I don't think he'd be able to stand being on someone else's thing. He and I have talked about doing a project together, so that every time I see him, I'm like, "We weren't just drunk, we're really gonna do that?" And he's like, "Yeah." … I don't [...]

Watch a Trailer for the Dan Harmon Documentary 'Harmontown'

Last year, after having been fired from his TV show Community, creator Dan Harmon took his live show/podcast Harmontown on a nationwide tour and it was filmed for a documentary by director Neil Berkeley (Beauty Is Embarrassing). Here's the trailer to that very documentary, featuring appearances from Sarah Silverman, John Oliver, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Jack Black, and more. The movie is also called Harmontown, and it premieres at South by Southwest on March 8th.

Joel McHale to Host the 2014 White House Correspondents Dinner

The Soup host and Community star Joel McHale has been named the host of this year's White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, the association announced today. The annual event, which a comedian hosts in front of an audience that includes the President of the United States and a bunch of Washington, D.C. journalists, will take place on May 3rd this year and as always, will be televised on C-SPAN. The last three of these dinners were hosted by Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers, respectively, and this is the first time hosting the event for McHale.

Not Many People Watched the Season 5 'Community' Premiere Last Night

The Dan Harmon-helmed Community finally returned to NBC's airwaves last night with a double-episode season premiere from 8:00-9:00PM, but the ratings don't look so great. According to Deadline, the show scored a 1.3 rating, down 32% from the season 4 premiere last February, and even lost viewers during the second half hour, slipping from 3.7 to 3.4 million viewers. That makes last night Community's lowest rated season opener yet, but it still beat out NBC's other comedies Sean Saves the World and The Michael J. Fox Show, which both fell to series lows with an 0.8 rating. Hopefully Community's numbers can recover now that it'll have a relatively [...]

Amazingly, 'Community’ Might Actually Get Those Six Seasons and a Movie

For years now, Community fans and the show's cast and crew have been using the phrase "six seasons and a movie" as a half-joking mantra about the show's future, but now, it looks like the show might actually be getting a sixth season and a movie.

TV Guide reports that plans for the movie are in the early stages and that Justin Lin is being considered to direct. Lin directed the last four Fast and the Furious movies and three episodes of Community, including the show's famed paintball episode. TV Guide adds that "NBC and Sony insiders say they're optimistic" and that if NBC passes on another season, [...]

Donald Glover Says He's Returning to 'Community'

Apparently next week at SXSW, former Community star Donald Glover — who attempted to reduce his role as Troy on Community last year — will be participating in a "hackathon" as Childish Gambino. According to Uproxx, Glover tweeted a link to his "The Deep Web Tour" website with more information, and if fans sign up for updates they'll receive an email from Glover with an interesting update at the end: "p.s. I am returning to Community, because the internet." We've reached out to NBC reps to confirm the news and will update when we hear back, but Glover's message makes things sound pretty certain, unless he's [...]

An Animated "G.I. Jeff" Episode is Coming to 'Community'

From puppets to video games to claymation, Community is no stranger to the animated episode, and today the show confirmed on Twitter that there will also be a "G.I. Jeff" episode this season. There are no details yet on the plot, but you can check out Jeff Winger's teaser graphic below:

The 'Community' Season Finale Is a Two-Parter, and B.J. Novak Is Guest Starring in Part 1

Community's season five finale is starting to look pretty interesting. EW reports that the show is doing a two-part season finale, and that The Office's B.J. Novak, who has his first book out this week, will be guest starring in the first part as "a TV star in a sexy new series." As with any Community season finale, the show's chances for survival are up in the air and the two-parter/meta elements make it feel like Dan Harmon is gonna make something real weird and cool in case this is the end. Of course, like last year, all of NBC's new shows bombed so Parks and Rec, [...]
