NBC Has Canceled 'Community'

It looks like Community won't be getting its six seasons and a movie. After five seasons, NBC canceled the sitcom today, TV Line reports. Community has been on the verge of cancelation each season of its run, with the show's low ratings always being the reason. Creator Dan Hamon returned to the show this season after having been let go the season prior. Cast members Donald Glover and Chevy Chase both departed within the last year.

Community's fate has been up in the air for the last few months. With a sixth season looking like a possibility back in March, it looked like the show had a shot [...]

Watch the NBC-Mocking End to 'Community's Fifth Season

Community ended its fifth season Thursday, and the very end of the episode was this series of fake NBC promos making fun of the show's home network's programming and scheduling decisions with a promo for a slate of new fake shows starring B.J. Novak, Amber Tamblyn, Questlove, and more. If Community doesn't get renewed for a sixth season (which is still up in the air), this is one cool way to go out. (via Pop Culture Brain)

Diving Into the Cult of Dan Harmon in 'Harmontown'

When introducing the documentary Harmontown at the South by Southwest Film Festival, director Neil Berkeley (Beauty is Embarrassing) described his film's thesis, saying, “The point of this film is not about whether Dan Harmon is a good person or a bad person, but to understand why people are in that room listening to him.” The film follows Harmon on tour with his Harmontown podcast shortly after the embattled show runner's firing from Community in early 2013. Berkeley's remarks make clear it's less a tour doc than a character study, in a similar vein to Rodman Flender's doc, Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, which premiered in 2011 also at SXSW. And [...]

Vince Gilligan Discusses His Upcoming 'Community' Appearance

"Everybody in their heart of hearts wishes they could be Errol Flynn or Harrison Ford, swashbuckling away in a big movie. I always knew I couldn’t act and I couldn’t sing, so I never really tried either. But out of the blue, Dan Harmon called up and said, would you like to do a guest shot on Community? And it was irresistible. I couldn’t say no."

- Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan to The NY Times about his on-camera role in this Thursday's episode of Community, which will be his acting debut.

Watch Paul F. Tompkins and Gillian Jacobs Have a Chat

Here's the latest episode of Paul F. Tompkins's web chat show Speakeasy, and his guest this time around is Community's Gillian Jacobs. As always with Speakeasy, it's a lively and engaging conversation that doesn't feel stale and pre-planned like a lot of TV interviews do, and Jacobs delves into some fun parts of her past, including her unusual start as a child actor, being on probation at Juilliard, and being oblivious to Community's frequent pop culture references.

Talking to Hilary Winston About Writing for 'Community' and 'Happy Endings' and Adapting 'Bad Teacher' to TV

Comedy writer and producer Hilary Winston has been building quite the impressive resume these last few years, jumping from critically-acclaimed show to critically-acclaimed show. After spending four years on staff for My Name Is Earl's entire original run, she did two seasons at Community and then two seasons at Happy Endings. Now, after years of writing on other people's shows, Winston has one of her own with Bad Teacher, a half-hour sitcom based on the film of the same name that premiered on CBS last week. Winston adapted the Bad Teacher to TV, serving as the show's creator and showrunner.

Starring Ari Graynor, Sara Gilbert, Ryan Hansen, Sara Rodler, [...]

Bearing Down on 'Community’s Triumphant, Challenging Fifth Season

Community’s return this year was one of the most anticipated comedy events of the season. The theme of redemption (always a deep part of the show) seemed especially prevalent, as this season had the tall task of establishing why this show still needs to exist. That it deserves to return after a lackluster (by previous standards) fourth season, that Dan Harmon and Chris McKenna returning as showrunners would be able to steer the show in the right direction, and that a Pierce and Troy-less Community wouldn’t feel like an imitation of itself; that this wasn’t a Scrubs season 9 sort of situation. Not only did the show stand [...]

'Community' Takes an Anti-Graffiti Stance in This 'G.I. Joe'-Themed PSA

Community's animated G.I. Joe-themed episode airs next week on NBC, so ahead of that the show put together this helpful PSA for kids who think graffiti is cool. Britta and Abed are aptly nicknamed Buzzkill and Fourth Wall, which are exactly the kind of heroes the comedy world needs.

Dan Harmon and Mitch Hurwitz Are Working on a Mysterious Project Together

Community creator Dan Harmon did an interview with Rolling Stone out today, and in it, he mentioned that he and Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz are working on a mysterious new project together.

Here's what Harmon said, although he deliberately didn't give a lot of details:

I've begged him to come to the writers' room on Community, but he has wisely declined. I don't think he'd be able to stand being on someone else's thing. He and I have talked about doing a project together, so that every time I see him, I'm like, "We weren't just drunk, we're really gonna do that?" And he's like, "Yeah." … I don't [...]

Watch a Trailer for the Dan Harmon Documentary 'Harmontown'

Last year, after having been fired from his TV show Community, creator Dan Harmon took his live show/podcast Harmontown on a nationwide tour and it was filmed for a documentary by director Neil Berkeley (Beauty Is Embarrassing). Here's the trailer to that very documentary, featuring appearances from Sarah Silverman, John Oliver, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Jack Black, and more. The movie is also called Harmontown, and it premieres at South by Southwest on March 8th.

'Community' Uses Donald Glover in a Movie Poster Parody to Help the Show Get Renewed

Community's fate is up in the air, with NBC's decision whether to renew the sitcom for a sixth season or not coming soon. Sony Pictures Television, the studio behind the show, has made a series of faux-movie posters featuring Community stars to get buzz about the series going on social media, and they even got former Community actor Donald Glover, who left the show early this past season, to do one.

Check out the Glover poster, a parody of the movie Cast Away featuring his character Troy Barnes, below (via TV Guide):

Watch Paul F. Tompkins and Jim Rash Have a Conversation on 'Speakeasy'

Here's the latest episode of Paul F. Tompkins's interview web series Speakeasy, and his guest this time around is Oscar-winning screenwriter and Community actor Jim Rash. It's a fun run-through of Rash's career, including the history of his writing partnership with Nat Faxon, the horrifying origins of his Twitter name, and the trajectory of his ridiculous Community character.

Amazingly, 'Community’ Might Actually Get Those Six Seasons and a Movie

For years now, Community fans and the show's cast and crew have been using the phrase "six seasons and a movie" as a half-joking mantra about the show's future, but now, it looks like the show might actually be getting a sixth season and a movie.

TV Guide reports that plans for the movie are in the early stages and that Justin Lin is being considered to direct. Lin directed the last four Fast and the Furious movies and three episodes of Community, including the show's famed paintball episode. TV Guide adds that "NBC and Sony insiders say they're optimistic" and that if NBC passes on another season, [...]

Donald Glover Says He's Returning to 'Community'

Apparently next week at SXSW, former Community star Donald Glover — who attempted to reduce his role as Troy on Community last year — will be participating in a "hackathon" as Childish Gambino. According to Uproxx, Glover tweeted a link to his "The Deep Web Tour" website with more information, and if fans sign up for updates they'll receive an email from Glover with an interesting update at the end: "p.s. I am returning to Community, because the internet." We've reached out to NBC reps to confirm the news and will update when we hear back, but Glover's message makes things sound pretty certain, unless he's [...]
