Freshman Sitcom 'Cristela' Gets a Full Season Order from ABC

It's not all bad news for new television comedies this year. Deadline reports that new multi-cam comedy and surprise hit Cristela starring standup Cristela Alonzo has been given a nine-episode pickup by ABC, bringing its debut season order from 13 episodes to a full 22-episode season. Cristela joins Black-ish as the only ABC comedy to earn a full order this season. Over at NBC, David Caspe's new comedy Marry Me also got an additional five-episode order from the network, but it's uncertain yet whether the series will eventually expand from 18 to 22 episodes.

Cristela Alonzo's Semi-Autobiographical Comedy Lands Pilot Presentation at ABC

Standup Cristela Alonzo — who got a Comedy Central half-hour special last year — has been given a pilot presentation for a semi-autobiographical multi-cam comedy she created and stars in. According to Deadline, Cristela follows the standup as "an American Latina straddling cultures while not fully belonging to either. Cristela, in her sixth year of law school and living rent-free with her sister and brother-in-law, hopes to land a prestigious law firm internship as her mother hectors her about getting a real job, her brother-in-law encourages her to move out and her sister runs low on patience." ABC Orders Culture-Straddling Comedies 'Cristela' and 'Fresh off the Boat'

After canceling a ton of shows last week, ABC has added two new comedies to its lineup both centered on family and cultural identity, THR reports. The first series order goes to Cristela, a semi-autobiographical multi-cam show by and starring standup Cristela Alonzo as "an American Latina straddling cultures while not fully belonging to either." The second show to land a series order is Fresh off the Boat from Don't Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 creator Nahnatchka Khan.
