'The Daily Show's Jason Jones to Star in NBC Pilot from 'Borat' Co-Writer

Longtime Daily Show correspondent Jason Jones may be moving to network TV in the fall. THR reports that Jones has landed one of the lead roles in Love Is Relative, a single-camera comedy created by Dan Mazer, Sacha Baron Cohen's former writing partner who wrote on Borat, Brüno, and Da Ali G Show. Love Is Relative follows a husband (Jones) and wife (Leslie Bibb) who start to second-guess their marriage when her just-divorced brother (standup Barry Rothbart) moves in with them.

If NBC orders Love Is Relative to series, Jones would leave The Daily Show, where he's been a correspondent since 2005. The Daily Show recently lost correspondents Al Madrigal [...]

Talking to 'Borat' and 'Bruno' Co-Writer Dan Mazer About His New Movie 'I Give It a Year'

As Sacha Baron Cohen's longtime writing/producing partner, Dan Mazer is responsible for co-scripting BoratBrüno, and both the US and UK versions of Da Ali G Show, but now he's going out on his own with a new comedy that he wrote and directed solo. Called I Give It a Year, Mazer's feature directorial debut stars Rose Byrne, Rafe Spall, Anna Faris, Simon Baker, Stephen Merchant, and Minnie Driver. The film hits theaters tomorrow in the States following its UK release. I recently had the chance to talk with Mazer about the comfort of making a non-prank movie, his love of Nathan for You, and the next wave of British comedians [...]

Trade Roundup: I Give It a Year, Only Fools & Horses, Andrea Martin

An early 2013 UK release date has been set for the London-filmed I Give It a Year, starring Rose Byrne, Anna Faris and Stephen Merchant, and written and directed by Sacha Baron Cohen collaborator Dan Mazer. It's a comedy about "a young couple in their first year of marriage," or as they say in England, "a young couple in their first year of marriage."

In other Bridesmaids star news, Wendi McLendon-Covey will be starring in ABC's Only Fools & Horses pilot (after Goldie Hawn left The Viagra Diaries and freed her from her role in that). Anyway, she and Steve Carell would definitely make this [...]

NBC Orders 3 Pilots from Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, Dan Mazer, and J.J. Philbin

NBC has ordered three more pilots including one from McKay and Ferrell's Gary Sanchez Productions, Deadline reports. The first pilot Love Is Relative is a multi-camera comedy written by Borat/Bruno co-writer Dan Mazer and co-produced by Tom Werner about "a wife and husband who begin to see their marriage in a whole new way after her newly divorced brother moves in."

The second pilot, titled Ellen More Or Less, is a single-camera show written by J.J. Philbin and produced by Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood) that follows "an average-size woman who, after losing 100 pounds, begins reinventing herself in life and love." Loosely based on the [...]

Stephen Merchant and Anna Faris Star in Ali G/Borat Writer Dan Mazer's New Rom-Com

Here's the trailer for I Give It a Year, a romantic comedy from Dan Mazer, Sacha Baron Cohen's longtime writing partner who co-wrote and produced Da Ali G Show, Borat, and Brüno. The movie, Mazer's first as a director, stars Rose Byrne, Anna Faris, Rafe Spall, Simon Baker, and Stephen Merchant, and judging by the trailer, it has just as many sex jokes as you'd expect from a romantic comedy by the writer of Borat.

NBC Buys Comedies from Harris Wittels and Dan Mazer

NBC is developing two new comedies for next season from well-known comedy writers. The first is an untitled show from Harris Wittels, a writer on Parks and Recreation and Eastbound & Down who's a regular on the podcast Comedy Bang Bang. The comedy follows a slacker who lives with his parents and is always disagreeing with them on how to raise his brother, a multimillionaire teen entrepreneur. Wittels is writing the script solo, while his fellow Parks and Rec writer/producer Alexandra Rushfield, is supervising.

NBC's other recent comedy buy is a show created by Dan Mazer, Sacha Baron Cohen's longtime writing partner who co-scripted Borat and Brüno with [...]

Checking in Halfway Through 'And Here's The Kicker'

Two weeks ago, we named And Here's The Kicker as the first book of the Splitsider Comedy Book Club. The plan is to give everyone a month to obtain and read the book but I wanted to check in as we're halfway through. So far, I've read the wonderful interviews with Buck Henry, Stephen Merchant, Harold Ramis, Dan Mazer, Merrill Markoe, Paul Feig, Bob Odenkirk, Todd Hanson, Marshall Brickman, and Mitch Hurwitz. Though the hope is to have a longer discussion at the end of the book, below are a few questions to be discussed in the comments section of this post to get the ball rolling [...]
