The UCB Improv Manual Is Finally Here

The long-awaited UCB improv manual has arrived! At Friday's opening press conference for the 15th Del Close Marathon, a mysterious box joined the UCB 4 on stage and quickly upstaged its famous co-stars; each time Ian Roberts held it above his head, chants of "Box! Box! Box!" filled the small basement theater. When someone finally asked the now-annual question about the progress of the group's book, the box (which had been joined by three brother boxes) was ripped open to triumphantly reveal The Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual.

Written by Matt Besser, Ian Roberts and Matt Walsh, the book was years in the making due to the busy [...]

UCB Announces Ridiculously Good Del Close Marathon Line-Up, Again

UCB has announced the schedule for its annual Del Close Marathon and as always, it seems too good to be true. The 56-hour long-form improv marathon has grown even from last year's insanity, featuring 420 shows on seven stages across New York City. There's an extra international quality to this year's festival, with teams from Mexico, UK, Portugal and Finland appearing. (Though there's also a team claiming to be from Caprica, so who the hell knows.) The highlights are spread across the stages, from the return of last year's amazing Mantzoukas and Morris at the main Chelsea theater, to several hours of Matt Besser's improv4humans at its [...]

Are You Ready For the Del Close Marathon?

The Del Close Marathon starts tomorrow!!!!!!! I've been not sleeping to get myself ready to watch comedy for 50 hours straight, which is probably a great idea! Not only did they make these useful videos (more after the jump), but there is an official Del Close Marathon iOS app too. It's a very helpful way to organize your presumably very busy DCM schedule. Also, the app is UCB trained, so when you ask it to perform a function, it "yes, ands," performing a second function as well. It's all you need, other than a change of clothes and deodorant. Seriously, bring those things or else the theatre [...]

Assssscat Monologist's Identity Revealed, Forwarded to the Authorities

The guy who told the story of when he had sex with a woman against her wishes as part of the Asssscat show at the Del Close Marathon's identity has been outed and confirmed by Jezebel; they also got in touch with his prior employers at Second City as well as his new theater Improv Vegas. Second City has forwarded his info to the authorities, and Improv Vegas has banned him from all shows and classes.

Poehler, Scheer, Kroll, Gethard, and More Reminisce About Past Del Close Marathons

"Among the UCB staff it’s unclear whether the Del Close Marathon is more loved or feared. It is literally like preparing for the funniest storm you could imagine—chairs and performers have been known to take to the air. The day after it’s over is always a relief, but I miss it immediately."

-UCB Theatre managing director Alex Sidtis about this weekend's upcoming improv marathon in a piece for Time Out New York that finds Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh, Jack McBrayer, Paul Scheer, Nick Kroll, Chris Gethard, and more reminiscing about

All Improv, No Sleep: Inside the 14th Annual Del Close Marathon

When you’re surrounded by several hundred sweat-drenched people on a New York City sidewalk for hours at a time, you don’t expect to see so many smiles. Unless, apparently, the crowd’s waiting to catch a taping of celebrity quiz show Match Game ‘76, or an X-rated pantomime performed by chanting robots, or a brilliantly threaded 30 minutes of completely improvised comedy — or all three in the same hour. Last weekend, a small army of exuberant fans streamed into the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre (and several nearby spaces) for all this and more, courtesy of the 14th annual Del Close Marathon, a sleepless weekend celebrating improv at [...]

The Del Close Marathon's Line-Up Announced

Better start figuring out how to clone yourself because the 14th Annual Del Close Marathon Line-Up is a doozy. The non-stop 50+ hour improv festival, which begins on June 29th, is nearly two months earlier than it has been in previous years, as to not interfere with pilot casting and thus allow more LA performers to participate. Some notable shows include: "30 Rock Writers", which pairs actual 30 Rock writers with the actors who play TGS writers – a nearly three-hour taping of Matt Besser's podcast, improv4humans – "Hot Sauce", featuring Ben Schwartz, Adam Pally, and Gil Ozeri – and like 12 zillion more shows. Seriously, just go through [...]

Inside the Del Close Marathon's Three-Day Celebration of Improv and Sweaty Drunkenness

“Hey. Remember DCM? (I don’t. Please fill me in.)”

Four days after I get home from the Upright Citizen Brigade Theatre’s 13th annual Del Close Marathon, this message pops up on my Facebook wall. I laugh for a second, trying to think of a stupid joke before realizing that — holy shit — I kind of can’t. Remember DCM, that is.

Towards the end, 50 straight hours of non-stop comedy on three stages (four, counting nightly featured shows) begin to blend together. Plus, the weekend-long festival is overcast by a frantic feeling of wanting to see everything (especially since this is likely your only annual chance to [...]

Splitsider's Guide to the 15th Annual Del Close Marathon

It’s that time of year again: the week when improvisers from across the globe gather in New York for 56 consecutive hours of shows (and parties) sponsored by the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. The 15th annual Del Close Marathon promises to be the biggest yet, with 420 slots featuring house teams from the country’s best theaters (including iO and Second City), indie favorites (like LA’s Shakedown and NYC’s Gadget), reunions (fwand and Mother!), supergroups (Let’s Have A Ball, TourCo Allstars), and, of course, plenty of late night insanity (three words: Match. Game. 76.).

It's a lot to take in, but we're [...]

The Tightrope Act of Improv Comedy

"An art form without an author, improv comedy is sometimes compared to a high-wire act, but truly to understand the level of difficulty, imagine a team of tightrope walkers chained together. Then every few seconds one daredevil must make a sudden, dramatic move." - The New York Times' Jason Zinoman on the risky hilarity that is long-form improv.

Stock Up on Sleep Now, Because DCM 14 Is Coming

UCB's 14th annual Del Close Marathon will be held in New York from June 29 to July 1. Cancel your plans, submit shows, begin sculpting a life-size wax bust of Del Close. Do what you gotta do.

One Night at Asssscat, or What to Do With a Date Rape Monologue

We’ve been getting a lot of emails this morning about a particular audience monologist that performed at the Assssscat at the Del Close Marathon on Sunday, August 14. In case you don’t know, the Del Close Marathon is the Upright Citizens Brigade’s annual improv fest in New York and Asssscat is the improv show that caps off the weekend. Last night, improviser Poupak Sepehri posted on her Tumblr about the show and in it linked to a video of the monologue, posted by improviser Stephanie Streisand. Having raised his hand and been chosen by the performers on stage to tell a story, the audience member in [...]
