Is 'Modern Family' Really the Best-Directed Comedy on TV?

On Monday night, Gail Mancuso took home the Emmy for “Outstanding Direction for a Comedy Series” for her work the Modern Family season five episode “Las Vegas.” This was Mancuso’s second win in a row and the show’s fourth win in a row in this category. This year, Mancuso beat out Comedy Film School favorites Louis C.K. and Lena Dunham as well as seasoned film directors Jodie Foster (for Orange is the New Black) and Mike Judge (for Silicon Valley). Looking even further back, the last time a network show director, in which directing is historically more like house-painting than Picasso, lost to a cable director is in 2004, when [...]

Fred Savage, Comedy Director

Fred Savage made the transformation from child star to go-to director of kick-ass TV comedies, including Modern FamilyHappy EndingsParty Down, BFFs and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The Hollywood Reporter sat down with him for a profile of his career. He seems like a nice guy, which will make it tougher for you to dislike him for being more successful than you from age 13 on.

In a movie that will likely be 50% in slow motion, Robert Ben Garant is going to direct a comedic version of the syndicated drama about boobs on the beach. The Baywatch script was written by Peter Tolan (creator of Rescue Me, Larry Sanders Show writer) and described as being comparable to Stripes. (Finally, we'll get to see Bill Murray and the ghost of John Candy in red bikinis.) It's not clear yet if Garant will re-work or completely rewrite the script; however, either way, this is one really weird project.

Bryan Cranston to Cook an Episode of 'The Office'

As we speak, Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston is directing one of the last episodes of The Office. Cranston has some experience directing sitcoms, working on an episode of Modern Family last season and seven episodes of Malcolm in the Middle when he was on it. Still, one could imagine Ellie Kemper being really scared of him. This picture was Instagrammed by Rainn Wilson with the caption: "Free meth for The Office!" Which is funny enough; however, there will be no free meth. He is in the empire business. Don't eff with Heisenberg, Dwight, unless you want to end up like a certain dirt bike.
