Going on the Road with Doug Benson in 'The Greatest Movie Ever Rolled'

It’s no secret that sometimes comedy is taken a bit too seriously. Comedy obsessives love not just the jokes, but the mechanics and emotions of the comedy world. There are a raft of comedy documentaries exploring comedy and comedians, but do they really have anything significant to add to the discussion? This series looks at comedy documentaries and whether they’re interesting, insightful, and possibly even…funny?

“I’m making a movie to raise money to make a movie about going on tour to raise money to make a movie about the tour,” Doug Benson says on stage at beginning of his new documentary, The Greatest Movie Ever Rolled. He then admits [...]

This Week in Comedy Podcasts

Did you hear, did you hear? The Oscar nominations came out this week and woof. You call these movies, Hollywood? More like move-these pieces of ssshhhhh out of my face. War Horse!? More like bore horse or snore horse or I roar (booooo) horse. Anyway, podcasts. Podcasts are good nay great. It can be argued (and is currently being argued by me right now with these words) that movies have grown worse because the talent that might have once made cinema is now spread out amongst other media like television and podcasts. Call me crazy but The Help is really only one or two Scott Aukerman punch-ups away [...]

Tompkins Does Many Characters, Lizz Winstead Visits 'The Dork Forest', and More

The Comedy Awards aired last weekend and with that came the announcement of the winner of Best Comedy Podcast. The nominees were WTF, How Was Your Week, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Sklarbro Country, The Nerdist – a hell of a list, if I ever seen one (and, trust me, I've seen lists). You know your art form has really made it, when a 2-year-old award show tapes someone on the red carpet reading the winner to be posted online. Making it even better is when that red carpet someone uses half of his time to belittle the whole thing (thx Col Q). And who picked those clips? Marc Maron [...]

Thankfully we’ve done the hard, grueling work already, scouring through most of the crop for you, and selecting only the juiciest offerings to put in your ears. These are the best comedy podcasts of the week:

This Week in Comedy Podcasts

Are you totally psyched for the Super Bowl this Sunday? Who are you rooting for? The Giants? The Patriots? Or maybe the Giant Patriots with their star QB, Paul Bunyan Revere (sorry/you’re welcome)? I heard Tom Brady doesn’t listen to music to get pumped (athletes still say, “pumped,” right?) for a game — he listens to podcasts, comedy podcasts at that. Seriously, look it up. Ok, don’t look it up because I’m lying but what if I wasn’t? Wouldn’t we all feel cooler to know we share a hobby with that human action figure of a man? What do you think he’d listen to? Who talks about their hair [...]

A Fairly Comprehensive Guide to Comedy Podcasts

UPDATE: Come check out the newer, much-expanded version of this guide: A Seriously Comprehensive Guide to Comedy Podcasts. It's this guide, plus tens more podcasts with in-depth reviews!

With the recent explosion in podcasts, it seems we are in the midst of a new comedic golden age. The distance between performers and fans has never been smaller, and more and more comics are taking advantage by increasing their output, like an army of Lil Waynes armed to the teeth with mixtapes. The market is now saturated with comedy podcasts containing trace elements of late night talk show, sketch fest, improv exercise, intimate stand-up session, and backroom history lesson [...]
