Judd Apatow, Thomas Lennon, Jim Gaffigan, and More to Guest Host 'Late Late Show' Next Year

Before James Corden takes over as host of The Late Late Show in March, CBS has lined up a bunch of guest hosts to show up between Monday, January 5th and Friday, March 6th. The network announced the lineup today, which includes returning guest hosts Drew Carey and Jim Gaffigan as well as Judd Apatow, Will Arnett, Wayne Brady, Billy Gardell, Sean Hayes, Thomas Lennon, John Mayer, and Kunal Nayyar. CBS has made some great picks — it'll be particularly fun to see Apatow, Gaffigan, and Lennon as late night hosts — but apparently the network couldn't find a single woman to host within two months [...]

Drew Carey on Johnny Carson's Impact on Stand-Up Comedy

It may be hard to believe now, but until the early '90s, the biggest influence on whether a stand-up comedian's career took off was left to one man: Johnny Carson. Not only would a shot on his version of The Tonight Show ensure that you could take a step up in the comedy world, but if he motioned you over to sit with him and Ed McMahon, you had the upper hand on any comedy club owner that ever tried to screw you over as you were coming up.

That's what happened to Drew Carey, whose career skyrocketed after his initial 1991 appearance on The Tonight Show, where he [...]

Craig Ferguson and Drew Carey Hosted Each Other's Shows This Morning

As announced a couple weeks back, Craig Ferguson and Drew Carey took over hosting duties on each other's shows today for April Fool's Day. Carey hosted the latest episode of Ferguson's The Late Late Show (watch his monologue above), while Ferguson is hosting this morning's episode of Carey's show, The Price Is Right, with Geoff the skeleton joining him as co-host. Check out Carey's full episode of The Late Late Show here.

Drew Carey to Help Charlie Sheen Ruin Improv For Everyone

Drew Carey, passable standup comic and guy every longform improv (read: UCB, Second City, iO) nerd likes to shit on for popularizing short form improv with Whose Line Is It Anyway?, is not going to be making any new friends with improv purists. His new show on the Game Show Network, entitled Drew Carey's Improv-a-Ganza (yep) seems inoffensive and ignorable enough as-is. I mean, it's on the Game Show Network. But then Charlie Sheen decided to join him, and it is all just too much: In an impromptu appearance, Sheen joined Carey and the cast of DREW CAREY’S IMPROV-A-GANZA live onstage when the 40-episode series was taping live improv [...]

Drew Carey and Craig Ferguson Will Host Each Other's Shows on April Fool's Day

Drew Carey and Craig Ferguson are set to try out each other's jobs for a day. USA Today reports that the duo, who spent nearly a decade starring on ABC's The Drew Carey Show together, will be guest-hosting each other's shows on April 1st, with Ferguson anchoring daytime game show The Price Is Right and Carey taking over Ferguson's The Late Late Show. Both shows are broadcast on CBS.

Carey will be bringing his announcer, George Gray, and the Price is Right models to Late Late Show. Last year for April Fool's, Carey and Gray switched places with the models on the show. Ferguson already taped his Price [...]

Six Comedians We Wish Would Return to Standup

I've always rejected the idea that standup comedy is useful as merely a stepping stone to other things (movies, a sitcom, writing gigs). In my opinion, it’s as noble a final destination as any other. That’s what made Seinfeld documentary Comedian so refreshing to watch — a legendary, insanely-wealthy comic heading enthusiastically back into the standup fray, while a virtual no-name claws and screams as he tries to escape it.

That’s not to say that a successful standup shouldn’t venture out into other areas. Obviously, comedians should explore the creative impulse in any direction they feel drawn. But while doing this, many comedians lose their way. And, when that [...]
