'SNL' Review: Ladies Night with Charlize Theron

Well, that was quite a turnaround.

To everyone who commented on last week's tirade against Andrew Garfield's lackluster episode that it was about time I gave up on SNL: this episode right here is why I still love this show, and why I will never give up on it. The 90 minutes was about as solid as it gets, with a low-expectations host Charlize Theron blending in seamlessly with the cast, the writers performing on overdrive, and even a few head-turning live-TV moments. 'SNL' Review: John Goodman Wasted

Sometimes I wish I could walk into an SNL episode knowing nothing. No information as to who the host or special guests are, or what their comedic experience might be, or what their past roles on the show have been. No expectations of the cast members, or knowledge of who the more senior players are or how much respective screen time they've been getting. No insight into behind-the-scenes drama or media scrutiny toward the show's staffing procedures. Never have I enjoyed SNL more than when I was a casual viewer, simply tuning in without any expectation of what I might see.

For a show that evolves constantly, SNL does a remarkable job preserving its brand. Despite the changes in the cast, the writers, and the culture it parodies, SNL will always be that live, hip, New York-centered show that puts up a few sketches at the end of the week to try to make you laugh. Now that Season 37 of Saturday Night Live has come to a close, let’s talk about some of the highlights from the past 22 episodes.

What struck me most about this season was the apparent hunger for new hit sketches.
