The Duplass Brothers Are Working on a Secret Project

Mark Duplass, star of The League and Safety Not Guaranteed and one-half of the indie writing/directing powerhouse known as "The Duplass Brothers," spoke to the press yesterday about his role in Kathryn Bigelow's Osama bin Laden hunt movie Zero Dark Thirty and he teased a new top secret project he's working on with his brother Jay. Duplass told The Hollywood Reporter, "My brother and I are working on a secret project that will be announced probably in the next month or so." Could it be the new Star Wars movie? The Duplass Brothers and Bringing the Lo-Fi Mumblecore Aesthetic to Mainstream Hollywood

With the recent mainstream indie success of Mumblecore pioneers Joe Swanberg’s Drinking Buddies and Andrew Bujalski’s Computer Chess, it seems the poorly named but important movement has officially come of age. In the mid-2000s, the films and filmmakers broadly lumped into the sometimes pejorative term “Mumblecore”, were often low-budget, low-production value films with non-professional actors navigating the conflicts and relationships of middle-class white male Americans in their late 20s.

Here is a list of the movies the Duplass Brothers have written: The Puffy Chair, Baghead, Cyrus, Jeff, Who Lives at Home.

Here is a list of movies Todd Phillips has directed: Road Trip, Old School, Starsky & Hutch, School for Scoundrels, The Hangover, Due Date, The Hangover Part II

Those are two very different lists of movies. The Dup-Bros pioneered the somewhat comedic, but in a VERY minor way, genre of Mumblecore and Phillips works in the area of Naked-Face-Tattoo-Dudes-Core. [...]

HBO Orders a Pilot from the Duplass Brothers

Mark and Jay Duplass just sold a pilot for a single-camera comedy to HBO called Togetherness, Deadline reports. The Duplass brothers, who have been behind movies like Jeff Who Lives at Home, Cyrus, and The Puffy Chair, will write, direct, and produce the series, which follows two couples living under the roof and trying to keep their relationships alive while pursuing their individual dreams. Mark Duplass, who's currently starring in the FX series The League, is not expect to act in Togetherness. This is just the latest show HBO is developing from high-profile comedy filmmakers, with series on the way from Christopher Guest and Stephen Merchant, [...]
